Nixon hailed as foreign policy genius at centennial of birth

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - At a ceremony commemorating the late U.S. President Richard M. Nixon's 100th birthday, politicians, a military official and Nixon's eldest daughter on Sunday remembered him as an underappreciated president and a foreign policy genius.

Nixon, the Cold War-era Republican stalwart who opened U.S. relations with communist China, was the only American president to resign from office, leaving the White House in disgrace over the Watergate scandal.

"He looked at (the world) as a world with 200 countries and 200 leaders, and he studied every one of those leaders, and he knew most of them," said Bruce Herschensohn, a friend and speech writer for Nixon who delivered the keynote address. "It's a talent that I have never seen equaled."

The 37th president died in 1994 at age 81.

During Sunday's ceremony, the Watergate scandal was not mentioned.

"To me, there's nothing to mention," Herschensohn said after the speech. "That doesn't make (the Watergate scandal) right, but that's the way Washington operated."

He said he wishes that people would people would view Nixon in the context of his entire legacy.

Along with Herschensohn, California Congressman Ed Royce, a Republican, and U.S. Marine Corps General Melvin Spiese spoke to a crowd of hundreds at the official Nixon library run by the Richard Nixon Foundation and the National Archives in Yorba Linda, California - his birthplace.

The three told stories about Nixon's achievements in China and his moves to end the Vietnam War.

A squadron of U.S. fighter jets flew over the ceremony to a roar of applause. Honors to the late president also included musical presentations by a U.S. Marine band and a 21-gun salute.

Afterward, Nixon's eldest daughter, Tricia Nixon Cox, laid a White House wreath from President Barack Obama during a brief and quiet ceremony.

She then spoke with reporters, including a camera crew from a Chinese news agency.

"I think in 100 years, people will remember he was a good man. A decent man," Nixon Cox said. She said she believes his true legacy, often obscured by the Watergate scandal, is one of promoting freedom and of reaching out to a nation that was once an enemy of the United States.

The Richard Nixon Foundation has planned more events throughout the year to observe the late president's complicated legacy.

PFT: Browns expecting quick decision from Kelly

images

Everyone except the Jets is talking about Rex Ryan?s notorious tattoo.

The Pats have added QB Mike Kafka to their offseason roster.

The Dolphins didn?t make it to the postseason, but some have received postseason awards from the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

The Bills built huge expectations on defense in 2012, and completely failed to meet them.

Ravens offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell reflects on facing the franchise with which he spent 10 years.

For Bengals QB Andy Dalton, a playoff game in his hometown is becoming a tradition.

If the Browns hire Chip Kelly, the roster may need yet another makeover.

More and more people are realizing that the Steelers need a good running back.

Titans DE Kamerion Wimbley, with only six sacks in 2012, says he fell short of his expectations.

Colts rookie RB Vick Ballard has gone from survival to, um, thrival?

Jaguars assistant coaches have been given permission to look elsewhere for work.

Texans QB Matt Schaub is ready for his playoff debut.? (His performance in big games this year would suggest otherwise.)

The Broncos? running backs have a ?next man up? attitude.

The Chargers will reduce or not increase prices on season tickets for 45,000 seats.

The deal between the Chiefs and coach Andy Reid covers five years, which likely gives him at least three or four years to turn things around.

When the Raiders coach one of the Senior Bowl rosters, there?s a chance they?ll actually be coaching a better team than the one they coached all year.

The Cowboys appeared in four of the six most-viewed games of the season.? (That and a Super Bowl championship will get you a Lombardi Trophy.)

As the Redskins uncharacteristically have thrived, owner Daniel Snyder uncharacteristically has remained in the background.

Giants G.M. Jerry Reese thinks that the team should have given WR Hakeem Nicks more rest when he was dealing with early-season injuries.

The image of Eagles LB Chuck Bednarik taunting a fallen Frank Gifford has been picked as one of the top sports photos of all time.

Life?s been good so far to Vikings K Blair Walsh.

The Bears have brought back speedy WR Brittan Golden.

The Lions were 1-6 against NFC teams that made it to the playoffs.

Since winning the Super Bowl less than two years ago, the Packers have replaced 14 of 22 starters.

First-year Falcons don?t want to hear about past-year playoff failures.

The good news for Buccaneers rookie RB Doug Martin?? He?s a finalist for the Pepsi Max Rookie of the Year Award.? The bad news?? So are Russell Wilson, Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III, and Alfred Morris.

The Saints have added WR Preston Parker and DE Jay Richardson.

Despite getting a head start by firing G.M. Marty Hurney during the season, the Panthers won?t start interviewing G.M. candidates until Monday.

49ers TE Garrett Celek, the brother of Eagles TE Brent Celek, was the only undrafted rookie to make the team, and he participated in more snaps than six draft picks.

Returning from a four-game suspension won?t keep Seahawks CB Brandon Browner from starting on Sunday.

The notoriously parsimonious Cardinals are surely hoping Ken Whisenhunt gets a head-coaching job in this cycle.

Rams offensive line coach Paul Boudreau says he got the most out of a ?bunch of misfit toys? in St. Louis this year.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: 7 Ways to Achieve Inner Peace and Prosperity ...

Each new year, people wish each other happiness, prosperity and peace, but only a few seem to know how to be peaceful -- like only a few know how to make money. Here are some steps that might help one to find the most needed inner peace.

1. Take Time for Yourself

Often, we become so engrossed in our day-to-day activities, we simply end up gathering more and more information, and do not take time out to think and reflect. Then we feel dull and tired.

A few quiet moments everyday are the source of creativity. Silence heals and rejuvenates and gives you depth and stability. Sometime during the day, sit for a few minutes; get into the cave of your heart, eyes closed, and keep the world away.

Taking some time for yourself improves the quality of your life.

2. Know the Impermanence of Life

See the impermanence in this life.

Millions of years have passed and millions more will come. Nothing is permanent. In this broad, universal context, what is your life? It is not even a drop in the ocean.

Just open your eyes, and ask, "Who am I? Why am I on this planet? What is my lifetime?"

An awareness dawns, and you will stop worrying about little things. All smallness will simply drop and you will be able to live every moment of your life.

When you review your life in a broader context, the quality of your life improves.

3. Perform Random Acts of Kindness

Make a commitment to make this world a better place to live. Do some acts of kindness without expecting anything in return. Service alone can bring contentment in life. It creates a sense of connectedness. When you bring some relief to someone through selfless service, good vibrations come to you. When you show kindness, your true nature, which is love and peace, come to the surface.

4. Make Your Smile Cheaper

Every day, every morning, look at the mirror and give a good smile to yourself. Don't let your smile be snatched away by anybody! Usually, you give your anger freely and smile rarely, as though a smile is costly. Make your smile cheaper and anger expensive!

5. Make Meditation a Part of Life

When we have higher goals in life it leads to stress and restlessness, which can be released through a few minutes of meditation and introspection. Meditation gives you deep rest. The deeper you are able to rest, the more dynamic you will be in activity.

What is meditation?

? Mind without agitation is meditation.
? Mind in the present moment is meditation.
? Mind that has no hesitation, no anticipation is meditation.
? Mind that comes back home to the source, which is peace and joy, is meditation.

6. Be a Student Always

Know that you are a student forever. Do not underestimate anybody. Knowledge may come to you from any corner. Each occasion teaches you and each person teaches you. The world is your teacher. When you are always looking to learn, you will stop underestimating others. Humility will dawn in your life.

7. Feel Grateful

Our love, faith and belief should be deep-rooted, and then everything else moves on its own. The feeling that "I am blessed" can help you overcome any failure. Once you realize that you are blessed, then all the complaints and grumbling disappear, all the insecurities disappear and you become grateful, contented and peaceful.

Julianne Hough tells Cosmopolitan she was abused as a child.

In the new film "Safe Haven," Julianne Hough plays a victim of abuse. And if the role resonated especially strongly with the blonde beauty, it's because her character's story hit particularly close to home.

The "Dancing With the Stars" alum reveals that she, too, was a victim of abuse as a child when she began chasing her dream to be a dancer, and she opened up to Cosmopolitan about the emotional scars it's left behind.?

In the magazine's latest issue, the 24-year-old explains how, at the wee age of 10, she hightailed it from Utah to London in order to follow brother Derek Hough to a prestigious dance academy.?

Vanessa Williams reveals sexual abuse as a child?

"I was 10 years old looking like I was 28, being a very sensual dancer," she recalls about her time at the school, where she won a five-year scholarship.?

There, she says, she suffered at the hands of adults who were supposed to look out for her. "While I was in London, I was abused--mentally, physically, everything," she explains.?

Still, the hoofer proved to be a focused and determined pro even at a young age, as she struggled to keep her head held high amid the painful circumstances.?

Did Toddlers &Tiaras go too far with kids-as-prostitutes getup??

"I was a tormented little kid who had to put on this sexy facade because that was my job and my life," she says. "But my heart was the same, and I was this innocent little girl. I wanted so much love."?

Although Hough declines to name her tormentors, she does offer, "I'm a very forgiving person, and I don't want to hurt anybody. What's past is past."?

Dancing With the Stars: Injured hoofers?

With her role in Safe Haven, it looks like Hough has found away to channel those struggles into a story that others might hopefully be able to learn from.?

New research helps explain why girls do better in school

Jan. 2, 2013 ? Why do girls get better grades in elementary school than boys-even when they perform worse on standardized tests?

New research from the University of Georgia and Columbia University published in the current issue of Journal of Human Resources suggests that it's because of their classroom behavior, which may lead teachers to assign girls higher grades than their male counterparts.

"The skill that matters the most in regards to how teachers graded their students is what we refer to as 'approaches toward learning,'" said Christopher Cornwell, head of economics in the UGA Terry College of Business and one of the study's authors. "You can think of 'approaches to learning' as a rough measure of what a child's attitude toward school is: It includes six items that rate the child's attentiveness, task persistence, eagerness to learn, learning independence, flexibility and organization. I think that anybody who's a parent of boys and girls can tell you that girls are more of all of that."

The study, co-authored by Cornwell and David Mustard at UGA and Jessica Van Parys at Columbia, analyzed data on more than 5,800 students from kindergarten through fifth grade. It examined students' performance on standardized tests in three categories??-reading, math and science-linking test scores to teachers' assessments of their students' progress, both academically and more broadly.

The data show, for the first time, that gender disparities in teacher grades start early and uniformly favor girls. In every subject area, boys are represented in grade distributions below where their test scores would predict.

The authors attribute this misalignment to what they called non-cognitive skills, or "how well each child was engaged in the classroom, how often the child externalized or internalized problems, how often the child lost control and how well the child developed interpersonal skills." They even report evidence of a grade bonus for boys with test scores and behavior like their girl counterparts.

This difference can have long-reaching effects, Cornwell said.

"The trajectory at which kids move through school is often influenced by a teacher's assessment of their performance, their grades. This affects their ability to enter into advanced classes and other kinds of academic opportunities, even post-secondary opportunities," he said. "It's also typically the grades you earn in school that are weighted the most heavily in college admissions. So if grade disparities emerge this early on, it's not surprising that by the time these children are ready to go to college, girls will be better positioned."

Research about gender differences in the classroom and beyond has grabbed headlines recently. Titles like Hannah Rosin's "The End of Men and the Rise of Women" and Kay Hymowitz's "Manning Up" have spent months on best-seller lists and inspired countless discussions in the media.

"We seem to have gotten to a point in the popular consciousness where people are recognizing the story in these data: Men are falling behind relative to women. Economists have looked at this from a number of different angles, but it's in educational assessments that you make your mark for the labor market," Cornwell said. "Men's rate of college going has slowed in recent years whereas women's has not, but if you roll the story back far enough, to the 60s and 70s, women were going to college in much fewer numbers. It's at a point now where you've got women earning upward of 60 percent of the bachelors' degrees awarded every year."

But despite changing college demographics, the new data may not be reflecting anything fundamentally new.

"My argument is that this has always been true about boys and girls. Girls didn't all of a sudden become more engaged and boys didn't suddenly become more rambunctious," Cornwell said. "Their attitudes toward learning were always this way. But it didn't show up in educational attainment like it does today because of all the factors that previously discouraged women's participation in the labor force, such as a lack of access to reliable birth control."

What remains unclear, however, is how to combat this discrepancy.

"The most common question we've gotten is whether or not the gender of the teacher matters in regards to grading students," Cornwell said. "But that's a question we can't answer because there's just not enough data available. As you can probably guess, the great majority of elementary school teachers are women."
