Happy 28th Birthday, Khloe Kardashian!

Khloe Kardashian turns 28 years old today, and the reality star has reportedly started the process of getting herself the most beautiful birthday present possible: a baby!

Yes, folks, Khloe has started fertility treatments, according to multiple reports.

Khloe Image

Aside from that major step, Khloe's life is relatively calm when compared to her sisters. She isn't dating the world's most famous rapper or battling with ex in court.

She isn't pregnant, nor is she dating Scott Disick, a man who constantly makes John Mayer look UN-douchebag-like.

Instead, Khloe just appears on her family's scripted reality show, poses on many red carpets and appears genuinely happy in her marriage to Lamar Odom. Those two certainly showed us!

So on a day where Ed Westwick turns 25 and Tobey Maguire 37, we choose to single out Khloe Kardashian for being the least irritating of all Kardashians. And we honor her with the following photo montage:

This post is not about exercise, fitness, health or spirituality | Jo ...

Photo by Tony George used under Creative Commons license

I practice yoga. And it occurred to me recently that yoga really influences how I work with clients.

Your post-Enlightenment self has probably put yoga in a box with running, weight training, pilates, and aerobics. And I suspect some yoga classes are like that.

I?ve been fortunate to have taken yoga classes with folks who don?t really see it that way ? Karen Smereka at Yoga Connection, Havi Brooks at The Fluent Self (unless I?m mistaken, pretty well everything Havi does is yoga), Louise who taught an ante-natal yoga and active birth class in Birmingham back when I was pregnant (forgive me, my kid is about to turn 15)

Here?s some of what I?ve learned

Meet yourself where you are

Your aim is [fill in the blank]. You probably won?t get there but it?s good to have that in mind.

Asana = home: you might be working hard but you should be comfortable

If it hurts come out of the pose

It?s up to you to make the modifications and use the props that you need

What you resist persists

Remember to breathe

Even just thinking about your body doing the pose is beneficial

Advanced practice is not being able to get into some complicated pose; it?s about how you stand in line at the post-office.

That probably makes no sense to you at all.

Don?t worry. I?m going to post about each of those things and ramble on a bit about how they make a difference.

If you don?t want to miss any, subscribe to my weekly blog post round up, or like?my Facebook page.

An ECI Conference

Rare earth elements (REE) include the seventeen chemical elements beginning with lanthanum, element number 57 in the periodic table, up to and including lutetium, element number 71, as well as yttrium and scandium, which have similar properties. Due to their unique magnetic and other properties (e.g., the ability to withstand demagnetization at very high temperatures), REE are widely used in a variety of commercial and military applications, such as hybrid cars, wind power turbines, cell phones, computer hard drives, and Department of Defense (DOD) precision-guided munitions. For example, a Prius hybrid car contains a kilo of neodymium in its motor and more than ten kilos of lanthanum in its battery. The permanent magnets used to manufacture a 3-megawatt wind turbine contain about two tons of rare earth.

Rare earth materials require a number of processing stages before they can be used in an application:

  • Mining rare earth ore from the mineral deposit;
  • Separating the rare earth ore into individual rare earth oxides;
  • Refining the rare earth oxides into metals with different purity levels;
  • Forming the metals into rare earth alloys; and
  • Manufacturing the alloys into components, such as permanent magnets, used in defense and commercial applications.

Most rare earth material processing now occurs in China. In 2009, China produced about 97 percent of rare earth oxides and it has announced to cut the rare earth export dramatically in coming years. To reduce the dependence on China supply, other countries have taken drastic actions to re-start the production of rare earth. In U.S., for example, the House has passed the Rare Earths and Critical Materials Revitalization Act of 2010 (H.R. 6160) and the Senate will soon vote on a similar bill (S-4031) to invigorate support for research and development in the field of rare earths. The United States Government Accounting Office (GAO) has published a report that details the need of rare earth materials in the defense supply chain. The Department of Energy has emphasized the importance of rare earths to clean energy technologies in its recent report entitled Critical Materials Strategy. Officials of the rare earth company that owns the Mountain Pass mine in California expect that by 2012 it will achieve full-scale production of mining and separating cerium, lanthanum, praseodymium, and neodymium oxides. However, the Mountain Pass facility does not currently have the full capability needed to refine the oxides into pure rare earth metals.

Rare earth processing methods commonly used in China have significant impacts on the environment. In order to meet the growing global demand for rare earth materials and products for clean energy, energy independence and defense applications in general and revitalize the domestic REE business in particular, new and more cost-effective and environmentally sustainable techniques must be developed and evaluated. The proposed conference will provide a timely venue to bring together scientists, engineers, professors, and students to report and discuss challenges and recent progress in REE related research and development with an emphasis on physical and extractive metallurgy involved in the separation and refining stages of REE and define future development activities and directions.

Outline

The conference will address the multi-disciplinary nature of REE processing and will attempt to bring together those who have expertise in specific aspects of REE mineralogy, physical and physicochemical separation, digestion, extraction, interfacial and bulk diffusion, novel chemical/reagents, waste water treatment/recycling and other technologies related to REE purification and extraction.

Engineering Conferences International (ECI) is a global engineering conferences program, originally established in 1962, that provides opportunities for the exploration of problems and issues of concern to engineers and scientists from many disciplines.

The format of the weeklong research conference provides morning and late afternoon or evening sessions in which major presentations are made. Available time is included during the afternoons for ad hoc meetings, informal discussions, and/or recreation. This format is designed to enhance rapport among participants and promote dialogue on the development of the meeting. We believe that the conferences have been instrumental in generating ideas and disseminating information to a greater extent than is possible through more conventional forums.

All participants are expected both to attend the entire conference and to contribute actively to the discussions. The recording/photographing of lectures and presentations is forbidden. As ECI conferences take place in an informal atmosphere, casual clothing is the usual attire.

Shaun J. McLaughlin ? Kris Wampler's Blog

Shaun J. McLaughlin believes every writer must be in it for the art, and strives to make his writing stand out from the rest. ?Shaun discusses his success with blogging and what he believes it takes for a writer to succeed.

1. Give me the ?elevator pitch? for your book in five to ten sentences.

My self-published novel, Counter Currents, is a story of smugglers, river pirates,?rebels, love, and war. ?Most scenes are set against the grandeur of the Thousand Islands?during the drama of North America?s forgotten war, the Patriot War of 1838. ?Among?the raiders was Bill Johnston, the Thousand Islands legend. ?The protagonist, Ryan, a?young immigrant, is drawn into Johnston?s world of piracy and secret societies. ?Ryan?falls for Johnston?s daughter, Kate. ?Tugged by the opposing currents of romance and war,?Ryan struggles to reconcile his troubled family history, his duty and his heart. Counter?Currents is history illuminated by fiction.

2. Why did you become an indie writer?

I worked as a writer ? journalist and technical writer ? for over 30 years. ?Since my teens,?I wrote fiction on the side. For my first novel, I queried dozens of agents and publishers?in Canada and the US. ?Over half never responded. One small publisher in Iowa offered to?publish it, but they closed down shortly after I signed the contract. ?Weary of rejection, I?studied the self-publishing arena and the related technologies, and made a decision to be?my own publisher.

3. Have you been traditionally published? ?Why or why not?

I do both. ?In the same month (March 2012) that I self-published my first novel, my first?history book, The Patriot War Along the New York-Canada Border, was published by?South Carolina-based The History Press. ?It covers the eastern half of the Patriot War of?1838.

There is an interesting story behind that. ?I created a history blog in January 2010 in?advance of my novel to help promote the book and the era. ?An editor at The History Press?discovered the blog and asked me to write a book about it. ?I said yes, of course.

4. How have you liked self-publishing so far?

I am astounded at how simple it is to be self-published. ?Between Smashwords,?CreateSpace and Kindle/Amazon, anyone who can follow step-by-step instructions can?produce books in multiple formats. ?There is no barrier to publishing. ?Technology has?sidelined the gatekeepers and unleashed writers. ?You?ve got to love that.

5. Tell me about the marketing techniques you?ve used to sell your books. ?Which ones?have been the most successful?

I have tried most of the popular marketing techniques: blogging, Twitter, Facebook, and?guest posts on other blogs and e-magazines. ?I had both books reviewed, and even paid for?an ad on Goodreads.

My history blog, raidersandrebels.com, is the most successful. ?It gets over 600?visits per month from history lovers. The key is to provide readers with free, interesting?content. ?That blog links to my imprint blog where I describe my books. ?A small?percentage of visitors become customers.

Two history articles that I wrote for the Thousand Islands Life e-magazine early in 2012?did well, as did a book review on that mag. ?The magazine?s audience is in the heart of?the region where both my books take place. ?The exposure led to a regional spike in sales,?especially for the history book.

6. What?s the most important thing you?ve learned about self-publishing that you didn?t?know when you started out?

My research into the business of self-publishing taught me that my book is one of?millions available. ?It is one leaf in a forest of 10,000 trees trying to be noticed. ?You?cannot be in this business for the money. ?Like a painter or musician, you must be in for?the art.

7. If you could do one thing differently in publishing your books, what would it be?

Next time I will spend no time trying to find a publisher for my fiction.

8. Indie authors face the challenge of marketing their books without the resources of?traditional publishers. What advice do you have for an indie just starting out?

From my observation, the authors that succeeded financially did not hit the big time with?their first book. ?They built up a fan base, good book by good book, until they broke out. ?In brief: write well, write often, be patient.

9. What are you currently working on?

I have a detailed outline for the sequel to my novel. ?It will be set partly in Australia,?which I will visit in the fall of 2012 to scout locations. ?I plan to research a second history?book on the Patriot War to cover events along the western front.

10. If you could market your brand ? not just one particular book, but your overall brand?of writing ? in one sentence, what would it be?

I write about history (and by extension, historical fiction) like a good journalist covers?current events: how people face their trials and triumphs never gets dull.

11. How can readers learn more about your books?

My publishing imprint has info on both books: raidersandrebelspress.com.

Economy and Society ? Blog Archive ? Global systemic crisis ...

When the trumpets of Jericho ring out seven times for the world before the crisis ? Published on GEAB no. 66, June 19, 2012.

http://www.leap2020.eu/GEAB-N-66-is-available-Red-alert-Global-systemic-crisis-September-October-2012-When-the-trumpets-of-Jericho-ring-out_a11079.html

When the trumpets of Jericho ring out seven times for the world before the crisis ? Published on GEAB no. 66, June 19, 2012.

The progression of world events unfolds in accordance with the anticipations mapped out by LEAP/E2020 during these last few quarters. Euroland has finally come out from its political torpor and short-termism since Fran?ois Hollande?s election (1) as France?s president and the Greeks have just confirmed their willingness to resolve their problems within Euroland (2) thus contradicting all the Anglo-Saxon media and Euro sceptics? ?forecasts?. ? ?

From now on, Euroland (in fact the EU minus the United Kingdom) will therefore be able to move forward and create a true project of political integration, economic efficiency and democratization over the 2012-2016 period as LEAP/E2020 anticipated last February (GEAB N?62. It?s positive news but, for the coming six-month periods, this ?second Renaissance? of the European project (3) will really be the only good news at world level.

All the other components of the global situation are in fact pointed in a negative, even catastrophic, direction. Here again, the main media are starting to echo a long-standing situation anticipated by our team for summer 2012. Indeed, in one form or another, more often on the inside pages than in big headlines (monopolized for months by Greece and the Euro (4)), one now finds the following 13 topics:

  • 1. Global recession (no engine of growth anywhere / end of the myth of the ?US recovery?) (5)
  • 2. Growing insolvency of the Western banking and financial system and henceforth partially recognized as such
  • 3. Growing frailty of key financial assets such as sovereign debts, real estate and CDSs underpinning the world?s major banks? balance sheets
  • 4. Fall off in international trade (6)
  • 5. Geopolitical tensions (in particular in the Middle East) approaching the point of a regional explosion
  • 6. Lasting global geopolitical blockage at the UN
  • 7. Rapid collapse of the whole of the Western asset-backed retirement system (7)
  • 8. Growing political divisions within the world?s ?monolithic? powers (USA, China, Russia)
  • 9. Lack of ?miracle? solutions as in 2008 /2009, because of the growing impotence of many of the major Western central banks (Fed, BoE, BoJ) and States? indebtedness
  • 10. Credibility in freefall for all countries having to assume the double load of public and excessive private debt (8)
  • 11. Inability to control/slow down the advance of mass and long-term unemployment
  • 12. Failure of monetarist and financial stimulus policies such as ?pure? austerity policies
  • 13. Quasi-systematic ineffectiveness henceforth of the alternative or recent international closed groups, G20, G8, Rio+20, WTO,? on all the key topics of what is no longer in fact a world agenda absent any consensus: economy, finances, environment, conflict resolution, fight against poverty ? //

? The shock of the autumn 2008 will seem like a small summer storm compared to what will affect planet in several months.

In fact LEAP/E2020 has never seen the chronological convergence of such a series of explosive and so fundamental factors (economy, finances, geopolitical?) since 2006, the start of its work on the global systemic crisis. Logically, in our modest attempt to regularly publish a ?crisis weather forecast?, we must therefore give our readers a ?Red Alert? because the upcoming events which are readying themselves to shake the world system next September/ October belong to this category. Texas GOP Senate Candidates Participate In Debate

Republican candidates Ted Cruz and David Dewhurst participate in their first televised debate at a Texas Public Television Station.

The candidates are scheduled for a run-off election on July 31, after neither candidate reached the 50 percent threshold in the May 30 primary.

The battle between the two candidates is being viewed as an example of the larger fight in the Republican party over the past few years between the party establishment, represented by Lieutenant Governor Dewhurst, and the offshoot Tea Party wing, which has supported Mr. Cruz, a former Texas Solicitor General.

The debate will be moderated by a panel of journalists from across Texas, and a studio audience of voters will also be allowed to participate.

Susan Tyrrell: 1945-2012

DALLAS ?

Oscar-nominated actress Susan Tyrrell, known for roles in offbeat films including John Waters' "Cry-Baby," has died. She was 67.

Tyrrell died Saturday in her sleep at home in Austin, her niece told The Associated Press on Tuesday. Tyrrell, who received a best supporting actress Oscar nomination for her role as barfly Oma in John Huston's 1972 boxing movie "Fat City," appeared in more than 75 movies and television shows.

"She had a larger than life personality," said David Zellner, who directed Tyrrell in the movie "Kid-Thing," which is currently making the rounds at film festivals. "She had more adventures and experiences in her life than most anyone I know."

The movie is about a 10-year-old delinquent girl who lives in the Texas countryside and happens across a mysterious woman, played by Tyrrell, in a well, said Zellner.

Her niece, Amy Sweet, said her aunt moved to Austin to live near her. She said Tyrrell's legs were amputated below the knee 12 years ago as a result of complications from a blood clotting disorder.

Sweet said her aunt's passions ranged from rap music to animals, and that she even had a bug collection.

"On the night she died, she'd found a dragonfly she was excited about. Everything was a huge deal," Sweet said.

A Travis County Medical Examiner's Office official said a cause of death was pending.

Tyrrell was born Susan Creamer on March 18, 1945, in San Francisco, though she eventually changed her last name to Tyrrell, her mother's maiden name, Sweet said. Tyrrell grew up in Connecticut and then got her start in acting on the stages of New York City before moving to Los Angeles, Sweet said.

Sweet said she plans to celebrate her aunt's life with a showing of "Fat City" next week at an Austin movie theater, followed by a gathering there to recognize her aunt's "unbridled irreverence and love for life." The movie showing and memorial will be open to the public, with a cost of $5 for those who aren't friends or family.

"She loved to party," Sweet said. She said her aunt would often write in a journal, and an entry from January featured the line: "I demand my death be joyful and I never return again."

Feasibilty study says its 'not the right time' to consider another ...

The Simplot Theater Project Consortium and the Boise Auditorium District released the results of a study it commissioned from AMS Planning and Research on the idea of repurposing the Boise Centre into a mid-sized theater and performing arts center after the proposed new Boise convention center is built.

After extensive research on Boise?s arts community, the national arts and entertainment planning company?s report indicates that this is not the right time to build another theater in Boise, said Pat Rice, executive director of the Boise Centre. The game changing factor turned out to be the Morrison Center?s new curtain system that turns the 2,000-seat theater into a more intimate 1,200-seat venue.

The curtain satisfied the need that originally prompted this study.

The consortium led by Esther Simplot and Skip Oppenheimer said that ? at least for now ? they would not go forward with the second phase of the study and will use the data from this report as a jumping off point to explore future needs.

Esther Simplot said she was disappointed in the results, and even though this not the right time to move forward with this plan, she will continue to support Boise?s cultural growth.

Timing, duration of biochemical bugle call critical for fighting viruses

Timing, duration of biochemical bugle call critical for fighting viruses [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 13-Jun-2012

Researchers have identified the primary player of the biochemical bugle call that musters the body's defenders against viral infection.

Scientists at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have shown that a key molecule, MDA5, is essential for producing enough interferon (the bugle call) to rally virus-fighting cells during certain viral infections. In mice, the lack of MDA5 forces the immune system to rely on less effective defenders, which may give the virus opportunities to establish or expand a chronic infection.

Like the cavalry charge in classic movies, timing is critical in fighting a viral infection. If a surge of interferon comes early enough, the immune system can limit or clear a virus. If the boost is too late, though, the defenses may already be overwhelmed.

"If an injection of interferon is given within a certain time frame in the infectious process, we found that it was possible to decrease viral spread and bolster antiviral CD8 T cell responses in our mouse model," says first author Yaming Wang, a predoctoral trainee in immunobiology. "Adding interferon may also boost the power of antiviral vaccines that are being designed to help the immune system recognize and attack chronic viral infections such as HIV."

The research appears June 14 in Cell Host and Microbe.

Viruses can cause both temporary and chronic infections. In chronic infections, the virus goes into periods of relative quiescence that limit its spread and diminish conflicts with the immune system. Those periods are often interrupted by flare-ups when the virus shifts gears and becomes more active again.

Interferon, which is made by the body in many forms, is named for its ability to interfere with viral replication. It is currently used with antiviral medications to treat patients with hepatitis C who are having flare-ups.

"Interferon puts cells into an antiviral state," says senior author Marco Colonna, MD, professor of medicine and of pathology and immunology. "This prevents viruses from infecting cells or reproducing in them."

Some forms of interferon also summon critical immune CD8 T cells to infection sites, where the T cells either fight the infection directly or store information about the virus to speed recognition if it returns.

Wang and his colleagues showed that MDA5 is the major source of interferon during a meningitis-type infection known as lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus.

Interferon production by a specialized immune cell, the plasmacytoid dendritic cell, dropped off rapidly within the first day of infection, but MDA5 continued to boost interferon production for three to four days.

Prolonging interferon production allows infection-fighting cells to stay in the battle longer, but also increases the risk that those same cells could cause autoimmune damage. The results suggest that timing and balance are critical, according to co-author Melissa Swiecki, PhD, a postdoctoral research associate.

"As we consider the implications of these results for expanding or refining our use of interferon in the clinic, timing and magnitude are going to be the key words. Can we find ways to get patients interferon when they need it and in just the right amount?" Swiecki says.

Colonna and his colleagues are planning follow-up studies in humans.

Western wildfires forcing evacuations in Colorado, New Mexico

The mix of timber, dry grass and steep slopes are making firefighting efforts difficult. Windy conditions are also limiting what can be done from the air by helicopters and air tankers.

By Susan Montoya Bryan,?Associated Press / June 10, 2012

Smoke billows from the Little Bear fire in southeastern New Mexico near Ruidoso Saturday. Spanning only a few acres on Wednesday, the Little Bear fire began to grow Friday as spot fires formed outside established fire lines due to windy conditions. By Saturday morning, about 10,000 acres had been charred northwest of the mountain community of Ruidoso.

A blaze in northern Colorado was first reported Saturday morning and had grown to about 8,000 acres by mid-evening, while a fire in southern New Mexico was small for a few days until it began growing Friday, reaching about 10,000 acres.

Both fires have damaged property and forced numerous evacuations, but officials haven't yet released specific figures on the numbers who fled.

The wildfire in the mountainous Paradise Park area, about 20 miles northwest of Fort Collins, prompted several dozen evacuation orders.

Larimer County Sheriff's Office spokesman John Schulz said the fire expanded rapidly during the late afternoon and evening and by Saturday night, residents living along several roads in the region had been ordered to evacuate and many more were warned that they might have to flee. An evacuation center has been set up at a Laporte middle school.

Officials didn't specify how many residents had evacuated but said they had sent out 800 emergency notifications urging people to be prepared to evacuate if necessary.

Law officers went door to door to alert people in the evacuation area, but officials were worried that not everyone got the word.

"Right now we're just trying to get these evacuations done and get people safe," Schulz told Denver-based KMGH-TV, adding that "given the extreme heat in the area, it makes it a difficult time for (the firefighters)."

Ten structures have been damaged, although authorities were unsure if they were homes or some other kind of buildings. No injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire was unknown.

Aerial footage from KMGH-TV showed flames coming dangerously close to what appeared to be several outbuildings and at least one home in the area, as well as consuming trees and sending a large plume of smoke into the air.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency said it was authorizing federal funds to help pay for firefighting efforts.

Two heavy air tankers, five single-engine air tankers and four helicopters were on the scene to help fight the blaze, which appeared to be burning on private and U.S. Forest Service land and was being fueled by sustained winds of between 20 and 25 mph.

"It was just good conditions to grow," National Weather Service meteorologist Chad Gimmestad told The Associated Press. "The conditions today were really favorable for it to take off."

Wind was also playing a major role in the expansion of a lightning-sparked blaze in New Mexico's Lincoln National Forest that jumped its containment lines and raced through thick conifer forests. Fire managers said 20 structures were damaged or destroyed.

Spanning only a few acres on Wednesday, the Little Bear fire began to grow Friday and by Saturday afternoon about 10,000 acres had been charred northwest of the mountain community of Ruidoso.

"It's nerve-racking right now," Mayor Ray Alborn said in a telephone interview Saturday, as he watched what he described as "real heavy smoke" rise from the Sierra Blanca mountain range.

The mix of timber, dry grass and the steepness of the slopes were making the firefighting efforts more difficult. Windy conditions were also limiting what could be done from the air by helicopters and air tankers, Alborn said.

"Today all we see is smoke," he said. "Last night, we saw the flames too and it was an awesome expression of power. It was red, red and we could see it going across the top."

Fire information officers said summer homes in a few subdivisions and several campgrounds were evacuated late Friday, and more on homes on Saturday. Roads throughout the area were closed, said forest spokeswoman Peg Crim.

The fire was burning in steep, rocky, inaccessible terrain in the White Mountain Wilderness of the Lincoln National Forest, which is home to Smokey Bear, the little black cub that became the nation's symbol of fire prevention in the 1940s.

U.S. Rep. Steve Pearce, R-N.M., was on his way to the area Saturday to meet with fire managers. He said decades of mismanagement, forests packed full of trees and persistent drought conditions have resulted in an explosive situation.

"We just can't keep managing our forests this way. It's not a question of if our forests in the West are going to burn, it's a matter of when. This is just one more demonstration of that," he said.
