The Simplot Theater Project Consortium and the Boise Auditorium District released the results of a study it commissioned from AMS Planning and Research on the idea of repurposing the Boise Centre into a mid-sized theater and performing arts center after the proposed new Boise convention center is built.
After extensive research on Boise?s arts community, the national arts and entertainment planning company?s report indicates that this is not the right time to build another theater in Boise, said Pat Rice, executive director of the Boise Centre. The game changing factor turned out to be the Morrison Center?s new curtain system that turns the 2,000-seat theater into a more intimate 1,200-seat venue.
The curtain satisfied the need that originally prompted this study.
The consortium led by Esther Simplot and Skip Oppenheimer said that ? at least for now ? they would not go forward with the second phase of the study and will use the data from this report as a jumping off point to explore future needs.
Esther Simplot said she was disappointed in the results, and even though this not the right time to move forward with this plan, she will continue to support Boise?s cultural growth.
