Senator questions results of Toyota safety probe

"Key questions about the cause of unintended acceleration remain unanswered," Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, wrote in a letter to NHTSA Director David Strickland.

Did Toyota get off too easily after it was largely cleared by a pair of investigations looking into the maker?s problems with so-called unintended acceleration?

That?s a possibility being raised by Sen. Chuck Grassley, an Iowa Republican, who has sent a letter to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, or NHTSA, questioning the results of two studies conducted for the agencies, in particular one done by NASA that found no evidence of electronic gremlins that might cause Toyota vehicles to race out of control.

?Key questions about the cause of unintended acceleration remain unanswered,? the veteran lawmaker wrote in a letter to NHTSA Director David Strickland.

New Toyota Avalon Hybrid to Hit 40 MPG

?Those questions have been supported by a raft of internal corporate documents also in the hands of TheDetroitBureau.com that suggest Toyota may, in fact, itself be worried that there are still yet unknown issues with some of its products.

Both the NASA study and a second one by the National Academies Science failed to substantiate claims by Toyota critics that the maker?s electronic engine control systems might be the result of Unintended Acceleration ? also known as Sudden Acceleration ? where a vehicle might surge out of control, possibly leading to a collision, injury or even death.

Toyota became enmeshed in a safety scandal when, in October 2009, a California Highway Patrol Officer and three family members were killed when a Lexus they were borrowing raced out of control, skidded off a freeway, crashed and burned.

The maker subsequently recalled 8 million vehicles in a pair of recalls, one targeting so-called ?carpet entrapment,? where loose floor mats could jam the accelerator pedal, and another related to potentially sticker accelerator assemblies.

Late last month, Toyota extended the carpet entrapment recall to include nearly 134,000 additional vehicles, 2010 Lexus RX350 and RX450h crossovers. (For more on that story, Click Here.)

Despite the number of vehicles involved in those two recalls ? which forced Toyota to briefly shut down some of its main assembly plants while waiting for the necessary replacement parts ? critics of the maker insisted it had not addressed the major problem.? But experts, including some on the NASA panel, also warned that it could prove near-impossible to track electronic gremlins that might only occur sporadically and then vanish without a trace.

Some pointed to a phenomenon known as ?tin whiskers,? in which nano-sized threads have been known to grow at key junction points on electronic circuit boards. ?Such a possibility was raised repeatedly in the 177-page NASA report.

?This is a serious issue,? Grassley wrote in his letter to NHTSA?s Strickland, asking how often and how far it has been pursued.

Traditionally known for its seeming bulletproof reliability, Toyota took some unexpected shots as a result of the 2009-10 crisis ? which saw key executives including CEO Akio Toyoda grilled by Congress and led to record fines for failing to respond to the sticky accelerator problem in a timely manner, as required by law.

The safety agency took some punishment of its own, however as a result of the Toyota scandal. Internal corporate documents showed that NHTSA went easy on Toyota by allowing it to avoid an earlier recall that saved the carmaker millions of dollars.? That was a key reason Strickland agreed to empower two independent studies of Toyota?s Unintended Acceleration problems.

In the end, both NASA and the NAS attributed the vast majority of reported runaway car incidents ? those not clearly linked to carpet entrapment or sticky accelerators ? to driver error. In many cases that was backed up by evidence showing that, in one instance, a motorist mistakenly pressed down so hard on the gas pedal, rather than the brake, that it bent.

Are Makers Reconsidering Small Pickup Market?

But the studies left open a slight window suggesting there could yet be issues unknown impacting Toyota?s electronics.

A spokesperson for NHTSA said the agency has received the Senator?s letter and ?will review it carefully and respond appropriately.?

Meanwhile, the various legal actions that have faced Toyota by alleged victims of Unintended Acceleration continue to work their way through the courts.

While Sony's 25-inch PVM-2551MD might not have the most glamorous name, it's the first and only OLED monitor with FDA approval for use in surgery. No, it's not just to give the doctor something more pleasing (or disgusting) to look at while she's removing a gallstone -- the organic display can be a genuine help for surgery through the higher contrast, virtually non-existent blur and more faithful color reproduction versus the LCDs it's meant to replace. Us patients likely won't see the now-shipping 2551MD for much longer than it takes to go unconscious, so it might be hard to appreciate; if it helps surgeons finish operations faster and with fewer mistakes, however, we could all reap the rewards.

Levels of hepatitis C virus higher among African-Americans and males

Epidemiologists have determined that levels of hepatitis C virus (HCV) found among injection drug users (IDUs) were higher in individuals who are male or African American even after differences in other factors were considered. The study, which was funded by the National Cancer Institute and performed with collaborators from the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center and the University of California - San Francisco, was the first to simultaneously examine the association of demographic, viral and human genetic factors on HCV RNA levels. Results of the study published in the July issue of Hepatology, a journal of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), also showed higher levels of HCV among IDUs who were co-infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

A 2010 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that up to 3.9 million Americans have chronic HCVa leading cause of liver cancer, end-stage liver disease and liver transplantation. According to the CDC 17,000 new cases and 2,800 acute cases of HCV were reported in 2010. Previous epidemiologic studies suggest one-third of those 18 to 30 year-old IDUs and up to 90% of older IDUs are infected with HCV.

"With such a high incidence and prevalence of hepatitis C virus infection among IDUs, it is important to understand the characteristics of the infection in this group," explains lead author Dr. Thomas O'Brien of the Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics at the National Cancer Institute in Rockville, MD. "The HCV RNA level is an important predictor of response to treatment in patients with chronic hepatitis C. Our study is the first to examine simultaneously the viral, demographic, and genetic factors that impact HCV levels in ethnically diverse IDUs."

Participants were originally recruited for the Urban Health Studya multi-ethnic group of IDUs in San Francisco. Researchers used interview data and biological samples from participants to analyze demographic, viral and host characteristics of cancer-causing viruses. A total of 1701 participants had detectable HCV RNA and were included in the present study. The median age at enrollment was 46 years and median age of first illicit drug injection was 18 years. Close to 75% of participants were men and 56% were African American, 34% European (non-Hispanic) and 7% Latino (non-African American).

Adjusted analysis revealed that age, gender, racial ancestry, HIV-1 infection, and IL28B rs12979860 genotype were all independently associated with the HCV RNA level. "We know that the level of HCV is an important predictor of treatment response and that these levels seem to be influenced by a number of demographic, clinical, viral and human genetic factors," concludes Dr. O'Brien.

Epidemiologists have determined that levels of hepatitis C virus (HCV) found among injection drug users (IDUs) were higher in individuals who are male or African American even after differences in other factors were considered. The study, which was funded by the National Cancer Institute and performed with collaborators from the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center and the University of California - San Francisco, was the first to simultaneously examine the association of demographic, viral and human genetic factors on HCV RNA levels. Results of the study published in the July issue of Hepatology, a journal of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), also showed higher levels of HCV among IDUs who were co-infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

A 2010 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that up to 3.9 million Americans have chronic HCVa leading cause of liver cancer, end-stage liver disease and liver transplantation. According to the CDC 17,000 new cases and 2,800 acute cases of HCV were reported in 2010. Previous epidemiologic studies suggest one-third of those 18 to 30 year-old IDUs and up to 90% of older IDUs are infected with HCV.

"With such a high incidence and prevalence of hepatitis C virus infection among IDUs, it is important to understand the characteristics of the infection in this group," explains lead author Dr. Thomas O'Brien of the Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics at the National Cancer Institute in Rockville, MD. "The HCV RNA level is an important predictor of response to treatment in patients with chronic hepatitis C. Our study is the first to examine simultaneously the viral, demographic, and genetic factors that impact HCV levels in ethnically diverse IDUs."

Participants were originally recruited for the Urban Health Studya multi-ethnic group of IDUs in San Francisco. Researchers used interview data and biological samples from participants to analyze demographic, viral and host characteristics of cancer-causing viruses. A total of 1701 participants had detectable HCV RNA and were included in the present study. The median age at enrollment was 46 years and median age of first illicit drug injection was 18 years. Close to 75% of participants were men and 56% were African American, 34% European (non-Hispanic) and 7% Latino (non-African American).

Adjusted analysis revealed that age, gender, racial ancestry, HIV-1 infection, and IL28B rs12979860 genotype were all independently associated with the HCV RNA level. "We know that the level of HCV is an important predictor of treatment response and that these levels seem to be influenced by a number of demographic, clinical, viral and human genetic factors," concludes Dr. O'Brien.

Tomas Lopez, Lifeguard Fired For Saving Man Outside His Coverage Zone, Offered Old Job Back

Fired Florida lifeguard Tomas Lopez, who was let go earlier this week for saving a swimmer outside his jurisdiction, has been offered his old job back.

His response: Thanks but no thanks.

"It's another chapter in my life closed and I am just going to continue to get my schooling finished and get on with my career," Lopez told CNN.

The much-publicized incident took place at Hallandale Beach, north of Miami, on Monday, when Lopez instinctively went after a drowning man.

Lopez said the man had turned blue and "was having a lot of trouble breathing." He was outside Lopez's coverage zone, though, so he got fired.

The pink slip was handed down by Jeff Ellis Management Co., which says lifeguards are not insured outside the beach for which they are responsible.

Ellis told CNN on Thursday: "Clearly, he should not have been terminated for what had occurred. I know that he has tried to do the right thing."

"I have no doubts I did the right thing," Lopez, who said he knew the rules but acted anyway, told CNN in the aftermath of his pink slip.

"I believe I did what was right, and that if someone needs help you're going to go help them, regardless if you're a lifeguard or not."

Three other lifeguards quit in protest and two others were dismissed after saying they would have followed Tomas Lopez's example.

As for the drowning victim, a nurse on the beach assisted him until EMTs arrived. He is said to be in good condition as of Friday, CNN reports.

Irish Rail sent a "Lost dog!" tweet with a photo attachment after the Jack Russell terrier arrived with Wednesday morning commuters on a train from rural Kilcock, County Kildare, an hour's ride away.

After more than 500 retweets in just 32 minutes, the photo found Patch's owner, Deirdre Anglin, who tweeted the state railway: "That's my dog!"

The episode underscored the ubiquitous use of mobile-friendly social media sites in Ireland, a tech-savvy corner of Europe where cell phones were the norm long before they were in the United States.

Soon after Patch went missing Tuesday night in Kilcock, 20 miles (30 kilometers) west of Dublin, Anglin said she did "the usual social network thing," posting pictures of the dog on her Facebook account and appealing for followers to spot him.

It wasn't until after Patch waltzed on to the 6:49 a.m. commuter train in Kilcock that the alarm was sounded.

Rail workers on board dubbed the dog Checker, joking he might be trained to inspect people's tickets, as commuters took turns petting the friendly dog. They turned him over to Pearse Street station staff on the train's final stop in the heart of the capital, when it became clear the dog had no owner on board.

Irish Rail spokesman Barry Kenny described Twitter as offering the ideal platform for launching a nationwide appeal for the lost dog. And he said some staff at Pearse Station wished it hadn't worked so well.

"It was good she showed up so quickly, because the staff in the office were getting quite attached to him," Kenny said.

Anglin said she was particularly pleased that Irish Rail posted Patch's photo on Twitter and noted that the rapid retweets by other users to their own followers ensured that, soon, the alert reached her.

Irish Rail and Anglin posted a series of photos documenting her Dublin reunion with Patch, their return train trip, and car journey home. She said fellow train travelers kept asking her: "Is that the dog from Twitter?"
