As family and friends pass away, Eileen at 93 ... - LIFE ElderCare

Eileen lives in a small, sunny room filled with neatly framed photos of her children, grandchildren, and late husband. A participant in LIFE ElderCare?s Friendly Visitors program, she has been living in a Union City Board and Care facility for several years and recently achieved the distinction of being their longest resident. She misses the friends she made who have passed away or who have moved to another facility. Without transportation she is not able to maintain contact with anyone living outside the home.?

Originally from New York City, she has fond memories of growing up near Central Park. ?I miss it,? she says. With her husband, she moved to California in the late 1970?s to be near their daughter. When asked her age she says with sly grin, ?I?m 93, not bad, huh!? Like many women who have survived into their 90?s, both of her children have passed away but she is lucky to have two grandchildren still living in the area.

For the past 3 years, Eileen has been getting weekly visits from Diane, her Friendly Visitor and Gini, her late daughter?s best friend who has been watching over her since she moved out of the family home. Gini and Diane have become fast friends and Gini recently become a Friendly Visitor herself.

Diane fondly refers to Eileen as ?my senior buddy?. ?We?ve had some fun times, celebrating birthday parties and going to Filoli Gardens in Woodside,? she says. ?On her good days, when she feels strong enough to stand, we go out for short trips.? They enjoyed attending Fremont?s Fourth of July parade and sometimes spend time in the park. Because Eileen is not in any pain, Diane gently encourages her to stay active and get more exercise.

When she was young, Eileen worked for the Pepsi Corporation. Out of five siblings, she only has one sister left who, at 83, still lives in New York. Because writing has become difficult, Diane writes letters to her sister and they share photos with each other.

Diane moved to the Bay Area from the East Coast and currently works in the field of transportation. She serves on a citizen?s advisory board to promote increased use of public transit to get more cars off the road. For fun, she plays golf and attends sporting events. Because she enjoys her time with Eileen so much and has made other friends herself in the process, she has recently started visiting a second ?senior buddy?.

She visits Eileen for about an hour a week unless they go out somewhere, then it?s usually two hours. ?I open her mail and listen to her phone messages for her,? she says. ?Recently, a friend of Eileen?s family found Eileen through the Internet and called her at the care home. They spoke on the phone and chatted about old times and now the friend is planning a visit with Eileen during her next trip to California.?

They laughed about a recent adventure to Kohl?s to buy a new bra. ?I tell her that at her age she doesn?t really need to wear bras anymore,? says Diane. Eileen responds with, ?No way, my mother was a fiend about bras, if you ?bounced? you were sent home!?

?Diane is very good to me,? says Eileen with a smile

Ultimate Fighter cast includes a former TUF coach and plenty of drama between Dana White and Roy Nelson

Nearly every season since the UFC created the reality series 'The Ultimate Fighter,' UFC president Dana White raves about the bouts and promises it will be the "best season ever." That's the promoter in him.

But as the 15th season is about to begin, White's focus is slightly different. The series, now known as 'The Ultimate Fighter Fridays,' seems to be as much about the battle between White and coach Roy Nelson as it is about the fighters or Nelson's upcoming fight with opposing coach Shane Carwin.

The series will return to the taped format on Sept. 14 with a two-hour special that will include all 16 fights to get into the house. The season features welterweight fighters, including Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt Cameron Diffley, who served as the jiu jitsu instructor when Forrest Griffin was the coach.

There have been plenty of times a fighter has fought on the show and then coached, but this might be the first time a man coached and then showed up as the contestant.

But the big news seems to be about the battles between White and the outspoken Nelson, the winner of Season 10.

"Carwin and Nelson are two guys who just can't stand each other and Roy and I haven't exactly seen eye to eye either," White said in a statement. "He's been a nightmare for me to work with on this show with all of his stupid b.s."

Nelson kicked things off in an interview with MMA Junkie in which he publicly blasted White. That is big news in and of itself, since so few of the UFC fighters are willing to take White on publicly.

Nelson, though, had no such qualms. He tore into White in an interview with MMA Junkie's Steven Marrocco.

It's probably because he wants to be a fighter, and he's not

Nelson continued to poke at White, painting himself as a guy looking to carry the sport to the next level.

I'm always at the back of the bus when it comes to the UFC. I'm just trying to further MMA to the next level, hold journalism up to higher standards, holding fights to higher standards, holding promotions to higher standards, holding athletic commissions to higher standards, and even holding the fans to higher standards.

White responded to Nelson following the UFC on Fox 4 card in Los Angeles, telling MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani that Nelson "is a huge pain in the [expletive]."

The dynamic between White and Nelson may wind up being the highlight of the season.

The 32 fighters who will compete on Sept. 14 for the 16 slots in the house and the chance at the UFC contract are:

Low-carbohydrate diets make you lean and healthy, systematic ...

The amount of research on low-carbohydrate diets have skyrocketed the last couple of years; mostly due to the increased popularity of carbohydrate restriction and the ?overwhelming? amounts of anecdotal reports from people following these types of diets. Individuals who adhere to a low-carbohydrate eating style usually get most of their calories from fat, and skeptics often argue that the increased consumption of meat and saturated fat will ?clog the arteries? and increase the risk of disease. A new meta-analysis, a systematic review of studies, found that low-carbohydrate diets lead to weight loss and improved health.

Pakistani officials confirm death of key militant

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? Pakistani intelligence officials confirmed Thursday that a U.S. drone strike last week near the Afghan border killed the son of the founder of the powerful Haqqani militant network, a major blow to one of the most feared groups fighting American troops in Afghanistan.

Badruddin Haqqani, who has been described as the organization's day-to-day operations commander, was killed on Aug. 24 in one of three strikes that hit militant hideouts in the Shawal Valley in Pakistan's North Waziristan tribal area, said two senior intelligence officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

The presence of the mostly Afghan Haqqani network in North Waziristan has been a major source of friction between Pakistan and the U.S. The Obama administration has repeatedly demanded Pakistan prevent the group from using its territory to launch attacks in Afghanistan, but Islamabad has refused ? a stance many analysts believe is driven by the country's strong historical ties to the Haqqani network's founder, Jalaluddin Haqqani.

The Pakistani intelligence officials didn't specify which strike on Aug. 24 killed Badruddin, but said he was leaving a hideout when the U.S. missiles hit. The confirmation of his death came from their sources within the Taliban, which is allied with the Haqqani network, and agents on the ground, they said. But neither the officials nor their sources have actually seen Badruddin's body.

Pakistani intelligence officials previously said they were 90 percent sure Badruddin was killed in a drone strike in a different part of North Waziristan on Aug. 21. It's unclear what caused the discrepancy.

Afghanistan's intelligence agency said several days ago that its operatives had confirmed Badruddin's death, but did not provide any details. A senior Taliban commander has also confirmed the militant's death.

A Taliban spokesman in Afghanistan, Zabiullah Mujahid, has however rejected reports of Badruddin's death, calling them "propaganda of the enemy."

The U.S. does not often comment publicly on the covert CIA drone program in Pakistan and has not said whether Badruddin was killed.

The areas where the American drone strikes generally occur are extremely remote and dangerous, making it difficult for reporters or others to verify a particular person's death.

Badruddin is considered a vital part of the Haqqani structure. He is believed to be the network's day-to-day operations commander, according to a report by the Institute for the Study of War.

The U.S. State Department has designated Badruddin, along with his father and brothers ? Nasiruddin and Sirajuddin ? as terrorists. The State Department said in May 2011 that Badruddin sits on the Miram Shah Shura, a group that controls all Haqqani network activities and coordinates attacks in southeastern Afghanistan.

Badruddin is also believed to have been responsible for the 2008 kidnapping of New York Times reporter David Rohde, the department said.

After their father effectively retired in 2005, Badruddin and his brother Sirajuddin expanded the network into kidnapping and extortion, both highly profitable for the organization, according to a recent report by the West Point, N.Y.-based Combating Terrorism Center. Afghan intelligence authorities have released intercepts of Badruddin orchestrating an attack against the Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul in 2011, the CTC said.

The U.S. has long viewed the Haqqani network as one of the biggest threats to U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan as well as the country's long term stability. The group has shown little interest in negotiating with the Washington, and has pulled off some of the highest-profile and most complex attacks in Afghanistan, although not necessarily the most deadly.

The Pakistani military has refused to target the Haqqani network, saying its troops are stretched too thin fighting militants at war with the state in other parts of the tribal region. But many analysts believe the military views the group as an important potential ally in Afghanistan after foreign forces withdraw. Pakistan worked closely with Badruddin's father, Jalaluddin, during the war against the Soviets in Afghanistan in the 1980s.

Also Thursday, gunmen shot to death a Shiite Muslim judge along with his bodyguard and driver in Quetta, the capital of southwestern Baluchistan province, said senior police official Wazir Khan Nasir. The police suspect it was a sectarian killing, he said.

Extremist Sunni Muslims have been killing Shiites with increasing frequency in Baluchistan and other parts of Pakistan.

How To Discover Your Optimal PPC Ad Position - Internet Marketing ...

If you use pay-per-click advertising you know how expensive and hard it sometimes can be to find the right balance between good campaign performance and a healthy return on investment (ROI). The two major PPC platforms in use today are Google?s AdWords (the majority of advertisers use this) and Microsofts adCenter. Both use a system to place your ads alongside relevant organic search results. The position on the page where your ad appears is calculated by looking at things like your bids, your ad relevance, and your landingpage quality.

Being at the top

People tend to think you need to get to the very top of the page to do well. Indeed, usually (but not always!) ads in positions 1 to 3 get the most traffic and have the best click-thru-rates (CTR). However, being at the very top of the ad results does not always give you the best ROI or most conversions. Depending on the industry, being #1 can cost you a fortune, as is the case with lawyers, credit cards, insurance etc. Yet, sometimes ads bring in more conversions at position number 4 or 5 (which is at the top of the right side bar) or other positions. Knowing which position works best to achieve your advertising and business?goals is very important. Read further to find out how!

How to find out which ad position works best for you??

There are several ways to find out. We will discuss 2 of them: using Google Analytics and using Pivot Tables in Microsoft Excel.

Using Google Analytics

In order to get this data you need to link your AdWords and Analytics accounts:

  1. In AdWords, select the Tools &?Analysis tab, then select ?Google Analytics?.
  2. Select your website in Analytics and once in, select the Admin tab on the right hand side.
  3. Under the navigation bar, next to All Acounts it displays your domain. Click on it.
  4. Select ?Data Sources? and in the menu below, link your Adwords to your Analytics profile.
  5. You?re done!

Now, we can view ad performance by position. To do so, go in Google Analytics and go to Advertising on the left hand main navigation. Under AdWords, select ?Keywords Positions?. Now you can select one of your keywords and, amongst others,?it will show the performance of your ads in several positions. This way you can see what the optimal position for your account is.

Using Pivot Tables in Microsoft Excel

The above method works, but you can only see data for?1 keyword at a time. Therefore, a more efficient way to get overall feeling for which position works best is to create a pivot table. This will allow you to see very clearly which ad positions are optimal for your goals.

Creating pivot tables is not that hard. I found a very useful video explaining this in great detail. I recommend you watch below video and follow along. Then you too will find your ads? sweetspot and become a more efficient and profitable online advertiser.

With choreographed conventions, is something lost?

(AP) ? As Chris Christie's moment at the microphone neared, delegates to the Republican National Convention were atwitter at the chance to hear the New Jersey governor speak. After all, who knew what might happen? "He doesn't seem to have a filter," said David Shimkin, a delegate from New York.

But the famously freewheeling Christie did in fact have filters: He used a teleprompter, and he read from a speech that has been vetted and approved.

Americans hunger for authenticity ? or, at least, say that they do. The explosion of reality TV is testament to that desire for the unscripted moment (even if that unscripted moment is, well, scripted). So the slick choreography of the modern political convention, while understandable, also seems odd. And, some say, it's actually counterproductive to what the parties say they want to accomplish: generate passion that translates into votes.

"This regard for order, this insistence on order, it's just weird," says Richard Bensel, a professor of American politics at Cornell University.

It's that need to control the message and the messengers that led Texas Congressman Ron Paul to hold his own alternative rally Sunday in Tampa, Fla., drawing a crowd of thousands. "It's exactly what the Republican Party should have wanted ? real spirit, real emotion," Bensel says. "That enthusiasm shouldn't be offstage. It shouldn't be in an independent rally."

But it's the way things work these days. And Robert Lehrman, who was Vice President Al Gore's chief speech writer for three years, says that if he were GOP nominee Mitt Romney, he would insist on an orderly convention.

"You're trying to show a unified, strong party that represents your views," says Lehrman, author of the 2009 book "The Political Speechwriter's Companion." ''And to have those kinds of debates doesn't help the campaign."

"Used to be 30 years ago, you had platform fights, and they would come from the floor and be debated," he says. "Now, they had some platform stuff on CSPAN, where 30,000 people watch it. But 30 million people have no idea about those things."

In the 19th century, the candidates mostly avoided the conventions altogether. In 1860, Lincoln stayed home in Springfield and his supporters did the work. To do otherwise, Lehrman says, "was considered immodest."

Harry Truman was such a terrible speaker that his aides, at the 1948 Democratic convention, decided to give him a list of talking points instead of a speech. To make things worse, just as he reached the stage, a woman rushed up with a cage full of "doves of peace" ? which promptly got loose and, as one aide would later write, "did what pigeons do." The speech went on to be one of Truman's more memorable, but it's hard to forget the pigeons.

There was a time when a rousing convention speech could make history. William Jennings Bryan was a little-known former Nebraska congressman when he arrived in Chicago for the 1896 Democratic National Convention to make a speech in favor of the free-silver movement. Most newspapers covering the event listed him sixth or lower ? if at all.

"He was technically a candidate, but in the way, say, Ron Paul is. Even less than that, actually," says Bensel, author of "Passion and Preferences: William Jennings Bryan and the 1896 Democratic Convention." But after Bryan delivered his now legendary "Cross of Gold" speech, he walked away with the party's nomination ? and a place in the history books.

Sociologist and essayist John Shelton Reed understands that the Republicans don't want another "Pat Buchanan moment" ? the former presidential candidate's infamous "culture war" speech at the 1992 GOP convention in Houston.

"There is a religious war going on in this country," Buchanan thundered from the podium. "It is a cultural war, as critical to the kind of nation we shall be as the Cold War itself. For this war is for the soul of America. And in that struggle for the soul of America, Clinton and Clinton are on the other side, and George Bush is on our side."

"Everybody seemed to agree that was not helpful," Reed says. "They didn't check it in advance, I'm pretty sure."

Christie is famous for speaking bluntly and loudly. But he understands that Tampa is not the place for winging it. In an appearance on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," Christie acknowledged as much. "I don't use text almost ever," he said. "So most of the time I think about what it is I want to talk about, and then I get up there and I talk about it."

Given the venue and the time restrictions, Christie said, "they want you to work off a text, and that's fine." But he noted that former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour reminded him that he needed to "be Chris.'"

"If that means I stray a little off the prompter every once in a while," he said, "that's the way it goes."

Christie did not stray much, except to add emphasis or focus his audience. And while he did seem a tad less spontaneous than usual, his delivery ? "I know this simple truth and I'm not afraid to say it" ? was every bit as powerful.

It's that delicate balance ? preparation without overpackaging ? that is so difficult to strike. Rick Andrews, who teaches improv at New York's Magnet Theater, works with businesspeople trying to communicate better. The trick for politicians, he says, is to try to "appear casual, off the cuff ? when you're not."

"We would be shocked if they weren't prepared," Andrews says. "But we also don't want them to appear to be overly prepared."

Republicans, including Romney, have openly mocked President Barack Obama's use of the teleprompter. But Ann Romney, the former Massachusetts governor's wife, seemed relieved to know she would not be up on that stage alone. She told reporters Tuesday that she had "never gone off of a written text."

"I had a lot of input in this, I must say, and a lot of, um, tweaking where I felt like was getting what I really wanted to say and from my heart," she said.

Whatever butterflies she might have had going in, they had flown soon after she took the stage. She even went off script at regular intervals, channeling Oprah Winfrey after a passage about mothers, wives, sisters and daughters: "I love you women, and I hear your voices," she shouted.

Mitt Romney has a reputation for being somewhat stiff. But Lehrman is looking forward to his performance Thursday evening ? particularly given that the GOP nominee has been working with an oratory coach. "I see him being more impassioned and more natural," Lehrman says. "He's been able to fake naturalness better."

And in the process, perhaps, something valuable is lost. That's how Bensel sees it. By sculpting their conventions so carefully, he says, both political parties are missing out on the chance to make history.

"The problem is, when you script the speech, the crowd isn't involved and there's no feedback, there's no spontaneity," Bensel says. "The whole connection between the party rank and file as audience and whoever's speaking is broken. You are just an audience. You aren't a participant in the creation of a political moment."

Senegal summons Gambian ambassador over executions

DAKAR (Reuters) - Senegalese President Macky Sall said on Tuesday that he has summoned Gambia's ambassador after confirming that two of its nationals were among nine prisoners executed by firing squad in neighboring Gambia amid international outcry.

Sall joined international appeals for Gambia to halt a series of planned executions of death row prisoners which includes a third Senegalese citizen.

"I have asked the prime minister to summon the ambassador of The Gambia tomorrow to notify the position of the state of Senegal. If he does not come at the appointed time, he will leave Senegal," Sall told a news conference late on Tuesday.

The executions, more of which are planned in coming weeks, could upset delicate ties between the two poor West African neighbors just as Sall seeks Gambia's cooperation to end the separatist conflict in Senegal's Casamance region.

Gambian President Yahya Jammeh vowed this month to execute all of 40-plus death row inmates by mid-September "to ensure that criminals get what they deserve." His announcement drew condemnation from the African Union, the European Union, Britain, Germany, France and human rights groups.

The United States also condemned "the lack of transparency and haste" of the executions and an apparent lack of due process leading to the death sentences.

Gambia confirmed on Monday it had executed six civilians and three members of the army for a variety of crimes which, it said, all involved murder.

Rights group Amnesty International, said in a statement that the 38 people still on death row faced imminent risk of execution, adding that there were concerns most of them were convicted after unfair trials.

"Some were sentenced after being tried on politically motivated charges and have been subjected to torture and other ill-treatment to force confessions," said Paule Rigaud, Amnesty International's deputy director for Africa.

"HALT EXECUTIONS"

The U.N. special rapporteur on arbitrary executions, Christof Heyns, said the executions were a step backward for the West African nation, which has had a 27-year moratorium on the death penalty and abolished capital punishment for drug offences in April 2011.

Heyns also raised concern over the trials and the execution of the sentences.

"According to available evidence the trials did not meet due process safeguards," Heyns said in a statement.

"The executions were carried out in secrecy, away from the public and from the families, and do not meet the requirements of transparency."

In Washington, the State Department said it was "greatly concerned" by the executions and called on Jammeh's government to stop them, pending further review.

"The United States calls on President Jammeh to immediately halt all executions in order to review all of The Gambia's capital cases and ensure that they are in accordance with The Gambia's domestic law and its international obligations," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said in a statement.

Jammeh, who seized power in a 1994 coup, has long faced criticism over his rights record in a country that attracts British sun-seekers with its tropical climate and white beaches.

In common with a number of African states, Gambia has the death penalty but until now has rarely used it. Amnesty said the last execution there was in 1985.

It is unclear why Jammeh, who won re-election last year in a poll that regional groups said had been marred by intimidation of voters and opponents, is pressing ahead with executions now.

One of Africa's most controversial rulers, Jammeh announced in 2007 that he had a herbal concoction that cured AIDS, but only on Thursdays, a statement derided by health experts.

Senegal's Sall, who saw off incumbent Abdoulaye Wade in a March presidential election, has sought to enlist Gambian cooperation to end a low-intensity separatist rebellion in the Casamance region that skirts Senegal's neighbor.

(AP) ? Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney swept to the Republican presidential nomination Tuesday night, praised lovingly by his wife from their national convention stage as the "man American needs" and cheered by delegates eager to propel him into the fall campaign against President Barack Obama.

The hall erupted in cheers when Romney strolled on stage and shared a hug and kiss with his wife of more than 40 years.

"This man will not fail. This man will not let us down," Mrs. Romney said in a prime-time speech that sounded at times like a heart-to-heart talk among women and at times like a testimonial to her husband's little-known softer side.

"It's the moms who always have to work harder, to make everything right," she said. And she vouched firmly for her husband, who lags behind Obama in surveys among women voters: "You can trust Mitt. He loves America."

Earlier, the Romneys watched on television at a hotel suite across the street from the convention hall as delegates sealed his hard-won victories in the primaries and caucuses of last winter. They ended the evening together in a VIP box just above the convention floor.

To send Romney and ticketmate Paul Ryan into the fall campaign, the convention quickly approved a conservative platform that calls for tax cuts ? not government spending ? to stimulate the economy at a time of sluggish growth and 8.3 percent unemployment.

Republican mockery of Obama began almost instantly from the podium at a convention postponed once and dogged still by Hurricane Isaac. The Democratic president has "never run a company. He hasn't even run a garage sale or seen the inside of a lemonade stand," declared Reince Priebus, chairman of the Republican Party.

More than eight hours in length, the session inside the Republicans' red-white-and-blue-themed convention hall passed up no opportunity to broaden Romney's appeal. Speakers included Hispanic candidates for office; former Rep. Artur Davis, a one-time Democrat and member of the Congressional Black Caucus; businessmen and women and former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, Romney's most persistent, conservative nemesis in the nominating campaign.

"Leadership matters," declared New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, keynote speaker and not coincidentally a Republican from a majority-Democratic state. "It's time to end this era of absentee leadership in the Oval Office and send real leaders to the White House."

Mrs. Romney's appearance was the highlight of the night, and it turned the proceedings into something of a his-and-hers convention.

"I read somewhere that Mitt and I have a "storybook marriage. Well, in the storybooks I read, there were never long, long, rainy winter afternoons in a house with five boys screaming at once," she said.

"A storybook marriage? No, not at all. What Mitt Romney and I have is a real marriage," she added in an appearance meant to cast her multimillionaire-businessman-turned politician in a softer, more likable light.

While there was no doubt about Romney's command over the convention, the residue of a heated campaign for the nomination was evident inside the hall.

Texas Rep. Ron Paul, who never won a primary or caucus, drew several dozen delegate votes. Earlier, his supporters chanted and booed after the convention adopted rules they opposed, but were powerless to block, to prevent those votes from being officially registered.

Opinion polls made the race a close one as the Republicans' days of pageantry and speechmaking began in earnest, and the man tapped to deliver the keynote address set the stakes.

"Conventions are always huge for a challenger, because they're the ones introducing themselves" to the voters, said New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

Convention planners squeezed two days of speeches and other convention business into one after scrapping Monday's scheduled opener because of fears that Isaac would make a direct hit on the Florida Gulf Coast.

That threat fizzled, but it was instantly replaced by another ? that Republicans would wind up holding a political celebration at the same time the storm turned its fury on New Orleans, devastated almost exactly seven years ago by Hurricane Katrina.

Romney's convention planners said they were in frequent contact with weather forecasters, but they declined to discuss what contingency plans, if any, they had to accelerate plans for him to deliver a formal acceptance speech Thursday night.

"This is obviously the biggest speech of my life," Mrs. Romney said as she visited the custom-made podium to prepare for her remarks.

Ratification of a party platform was prelude to Romney's nomination, a document more conservative on abortion than the candidate.

On economic matters, it backs extension of the tax cuts enacted in 2001 and 2003 and due to expire at year's end, without exception. It also calls for an additional 20 percent reduction in income tax brackets that Romney favors.

In a time of 8.3 percent unemployment and the slowest economic recovery in the post-World War II era, that went to the crux of the campaign for the White House.

By contrast, Obama wants to allow existing tax cuts to expire on upper income taxpayers, and has criticized Romney's overall economic plans as a boon to millionaires that would raise taxes on the middle class.

The GOP platform also pledges that a Republican-controlled Congress will repeal, and Romney will sign, legislation to repeal the health care legislation Obama won from a Democratic-controlled Congress. So, too, for the measure passed to regulate Wall Street in the wake of the 2008 economic collapse.

On abortion, the platform says, "The unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed."

Romney opposes abortions, except in cases of rape, incest, or when "the health and life of the mother" are at stake, he said in a convention week interview.

Obama, who accepts renomination at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., next week, campaigned in Iowa Tuesday as he set out on a tour of college campuses in battleground states in hopes of boosting voter registration among college students.

Before departing the White House, he made a point of appearing before reporters to announce the government's latest steps to help those in the way of Isaac. He signed a declaration of emergency for Mississippi and ordered federal aid to supplement state and local storm response efforts in the state.

His surrogates did their best to counter Romney and the Republicans.

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, dismissing GOP attempts to woo Hispanic voters, said, "You can't just trot out a brown face or a Spanish surname and expect people are going to vote for your party or your candidate." He added, "This is a party with a platform that calls for the self-deportation of 11 million people."

Hispanics strongly favor Obama, according to public polls, and Romney and his party have been seeking to win a bigger share of their votes by emphasizing proposals to fix the economy rather than ease their positions on immigration.

Female voters, too, prefer the president over his challenger, and Democrats have done their best to emphasize GOP opposition to abortion and even suggest the party might try and curtail access to contraceptives if it wins power.

Whatever the impact of those issues, the polls show the economy is overwhelmingly the dominant issue in the race, and on that, the voters narrowly say they trust Romney more.

In an AP-GfK poll taken Aug. 16-20, some 48 percent of registered voters said they trust Romney more on economic issues, to 44 percent for Obama.

However, a Washington Post-ABC News in the days immediately before the convention found that 61 percent of registered voters said Obama was more likable, and 27 percent said Romney.

The convention took place in an atmosphere of security that was both stringent and selective. Thousands of police from all over the country, joined by National Guard troops, Secret Service and others, stood in small groups at checkpoints, demanding those entering a secure area display proper credentials numerous times.

But former Michigan Gov. John Engler and an aide were hustled to the front of a long line waiting to clear security at one building.

Aside from Paul, Romney's long-ago rivals for the party nomination had bit roles at his convention, if that.

Michele Bachmann and Herman Cain posed for a photo after running into each other at the convention center. Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum were also in town, as well, both with speaking slots, unlike Bachmann and Cain.

How to Keep Your Pets Safe from Disaster : The Humane Society of ...

August?27,?2012

Save lives by creating a plan for dealing with natural catastrophes or everyday emergencies

Planning for a disaster may seem overwhelming, but The HSUS's disaster guide will make it easy. We'll tell you what you can do right now, when disaster strikes, and even after to make sure that you and your pets come through just fine. The first step is to make your disaster plan.

A good disaster plan will prepare you for disasters that come with some warning (hurricanes, wildfires, or floods) and those that strike suddenly (chemical spills or tornadoes). You'll even be ready for extended power outages that become true emergencies if they happen during a heat wave or ice storm

TO-DO LIST FOR PROTECTING YOUR PETS IN A DISASTER
?

Did you know that the federal government now officially supports including pets in disaster plans? FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate said, ?Animals are important members of millions of families across this country?and as such they should also be included in our family emergency plans.? You're on your way.

?1. Start getting ready now

ID your pet

Make sure that your cat or dog is wearing a collar and identification that is up to date and visible at all times. You'll increase your chances of being reunited with a lost pet by having him or her microchipped. If your pet is adopted from a shelter or rescue organization, make sure the registration has been transferred to you and is not still with the adoption group.

Put your cell phone number on your pet's tag. It may also be a good idea to include the phone number of a friend or relative outside your immediate area?in case you have had to evacuate.

Put together your disaster kit

Every member of your family should know what he or she needs to take when you evacuate. You'll also need supplies for your pet. Stock up on non-perishables well ahead of time,?and have everything ready to go at a moment's notice. Keep everything accessible and stored in sturdy containers (duffel bags, covered trash containers, etc.) that can be carried easily. Any dry pet food should be stored in air-tight containers and refreshed every 6 months.

If you live in an area prone to flooding or hurricanes, make a kit to keep in your car in case you have to evacuate quickly. If you live in an area where tornadoes occur, store supplies in a tornado-proof room or cellar. (Learn more about keeping your pet safe during a tornado.)

A basic disaster kit

  • Food and water for at least five days for each pet, bowls and a manual can opener if you are packing canned pet food. People need at least one gallon of water per person per day. While your pet may not need that much, keep an extra gallon on hand if your pet has been exposed to chemicals or flood waters and needs to be rinsed.
  • Medications and medical records stored in a waterproof container and a first aid kit. A pet first aid book is also a good idea.
  • Cat litter box, litter, litter scoop, garbage bags to collect all pets' waste.
  • Sturdy leashes, harnesses, and carriers to transport pets safely and to ensure that your pets can't escape. Carriers should be large enough to allow your pet to stand comfortably, turn around, and lie down. (Your pet may have to stay in the carrier for hours at a time.) Be sure to have a secure cage with no loose objects inside it to accommodate smaller pets?who may also need blankets or towels for bedding and warmth as well as special items, depending on their species.
  • Current photos of you with your pets and descriptions of your pets to help others identify them in case you and your pets become separated?and to prove that they are yours once you're reunited.
  • Pet beds and toys, if you can easily take them, to reduce stress.
  • Written information about your pets' feeding schedules, medical conditions, and behavior issues along with the name and number of your veterinarian in case you have to board your pets or place them in foster care.

Other useful items include newspapers, paper towels, plastic trash bags, grooming items, and household bleach.

Find a safe place to stay ahead of time

Some communities have groups that have solely focused on providing emergency sheltering for pets, and other communities simply don?t have the resources. That's why you should never assume that you will be allowed to bring your pet to an emergency shelter.

Before disaster hits call your local office of emergency management to see if you will be allowed to evacuate with your pets and that there will be shelters that take people and their pets in your area. And just to be safe, track down a pet-friendly safe place for your family and pets.

?Find a pet-friendly hotel or motel:

Make arrangements with friends or relatives. Ask people outside the immediate area if they would be able to shelter you and your pets?or just your pets?if necessary. If you have more than one pet, you may need to arrange to house them at separate locations.

Consider a kennel or veterinarian's office. Make a list of boarding facilities and veterinary offices that might be able to shelter animals in disaster emergencies (include their 24-hour telephone numbers).

As a last resort, ask your local animal shelter. Some shelters may be able to provide foster care or shelter for pets in an emergency. But shelters have limited resources and are likely to be stretched to their limits during an emergency.

Plan for your pet in case you're not home

A disaster or evacuation order may come when you're out of the house.

  • Make arrangements well in advance for a trusted neighbor or nearby friend or family member to take your pets and meet you at a specified location. Be sure the person is comfortable with your pets and your pets are familiar with him or her. Give your emergency caretaker a key to your home and show her or him where your pets are likely to be (or hide) and where your disaster supplies are kept.
  • If you use a pet-sitting service,?it may be able to help, but discuss the possibility well in advance.

?2. If you evacuate, take your pet

Rule number one: If it isn't safe for you, it isn't safe for your pets. Even if you think you will only be gone for a few hours, take your pets. You have no way of knowing how long you'll be kept out of the area, and you may not be able?or allowed?to go back for your pets.

Pets left behind in a disaster can easily be injured, lost, or killed. Those left inside your home can escape through storm-damaged areas, such as broken windows. And pets turned loose to fend for themselves are likely to become victims of exposure, starvation, predators, contaminated food or water, or accidents. Leaving dogs tied or chained outside in a disaster is a death sentence.

Rule number two: Evacuate early. Don't wait for a mandatory evacuation order. Some people who have waited to be evacuated by emergency officials have been told to leave their pets behind.

The smell of smoke, high winds or lightening may make your pet more fearful and difficult to load into a crate or carrier. Evacuating before conditions become severe will keep everyone safer and make the process less stressful.

3. If you stay home, do it safely

If your family and pets must wait out a storm or other disaster at home, identify a safe area of your home where you can all stay together. Make that safe area animal friendly:

  • Close off or eliminate unsafe nooks and crannies where frightened cats may try to hide.
  • Move dangerous items such as tools or toxic products that have been stored in the area.

Be sure to close your windows and doors, stay inside, and follow the instructions from your local emergency management office.

  • Bring your pets indoors as soon as local authorities say trouble is on the way. Keep pets under your direct control; if you have to evacuate, you will not have to spend time trying to find them. Keep dogs on leashes and cats in carriers, and make sure they are wearing identification.
  • If you have a room you can designate as a "safe room," put your emergency supplies in that room in advance, including your pet's crate and supplies. Have any medications and a supply of pet food and water inside watertight containers, along with your other emergency supplies. If there is an open fireplace, vent, pet door, or similar opening in the house, close it off with plastic sheeting and strong tape.
  • Listen to the radio periodically, and don't come out until you know it's safe.

4. Keep taking care even after the disaster

Your home may be a very different place after the emergency is over, and it may be hard for your pets to adjust.

  • Don't allow your pets to roam loose. Familiar landmarks and smells might be gone, and your pet will probably be disoriented. Pets can easily get lost in such situations.
  • While you assess the damage, keep dogs on leashes and cats in carriers inside the house. If your house is damaged, your pets could escape.
  • Be patient with your pets after a disaster. Try to get them back into their normal routines as soon as possible. Be ready for behavioral problems caused by the stress of the situation. If these problems persist, or if your pet seems to be having any health problems, talk to your veterinarian.
  • If your community has been flooded, search your home and yard for wild animals who may have sought refuge there. Stressed wildlife can pose a threat to you and your pet.

?5. Be ready for everyday emergencies

For your pet, an emergency can be something much less dramatic than a hurricane or earthquake.

?You can't get home to your pet

There may be times that you can't get home to take care of your pets. Icy roads may trap you at the office overnight, an accident may send you to the hospital?things happen. But you can make sure your pets get the care they need by making arrangements now:

  • Find a trusted neighbor, friend, or family member and give him or her a key to your house or barn. Make sure this back-up caretaker is comfortable and familiar with your pets (and vice versa).
  • Make sure your back-up caretaker knows your pets' whereabouts and habits.
  • Let your back-up caretaker know where your pets' food is and where you normally feed them and keep their water bowl, and if they need any medication.
  • If you use a pet sitting service, find out in advance if they will be able to help in case of an emergency.

?Heat wave

High temperatures don't just make your pets uncomfortable; they can be dangerous. Here are basic guidelines for summer safety.

  • Never leave your pets in a parked car. Not even for a minute. Not even with the car running and air conditioner on. (Download our "Hot Car" flyer)
  • Watch the humidity. Dr. Barry Kellogg, VMD, of the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association says, "Animals pant to evaporate moisture from their lungs, which takes heat away from their body. If the humidity is too high, they are unable to cool themselves, and their temperature will skyrocket to dangerous levels?very quickly."
  • Don't rely on a fan. They don't cool off pets as effectively as they do people.
  • Provide lots of shade and water. Any time your pet is outside, make sure he or she has protection from heat and sun and plenty of fresh, cold water. A doghouse does not provide relief from heat?in fact, it makes it worse.
  • Limit exercise on hot days to early morning or evening hours, and be especially careful with pets with white-colored ears, who are more susceptible to skin cancer, and short-nosed pets who, because of their short noses, typically have difficulty breathing. Asphalt gets very hot and can burn your pet's paws, so walk your dog on the grass if possible.
  • Look for signs of heatstroke, including heavy panting, glazed eyes, a rapid heartbeat, difficulty breathing, excessive thirst, lethargy, fever, dizziness, lack of coordination, profuse salivation, vomiting, a deep red or purple tongue, seizure, and unconsciousness.
  • Treat suspected heatstroke immediately. Move your pet into the shade or an air-conditioned area. Apply ice packs or cold towels to her head, neck, and chest or run cool (not cold) water over her. Let her drink small amounts of cool water or lick ice cubes. Take her directly to a veterinarian.
  • Learn more about hot weather safety

?If the power goes out

Keep your pets with you. If you're forced to leave your home because you've lost electricity, take your pets. If it's summer, even just an hour or two in the sweltering heat, whether outdoors in a yard or inside an apartment, mobile home, or house, can be dangerous. Find a pet friendly hotel. If it's winter, don't be fooled by your pets' fur coats; it isn't safe to leave them in an un-heated house.

If you stay at home during a summer power outage, ask your local emergency management office if there are pet-friendly cooling centers in the area.

Apple lists 8 Samsung products it wants banned

(AP) ? Apple Inc. on Monday gave a federal judge a list of eight Samsung Electronics Co. products it wants pulled from shelves and banned from the U.S. market.

U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh asked for the list after a jury in San Jose last week slammed Samsung with a $1.05 billion verdict, finding that the South Korean technology giant had "willfully" copied Apple's iPhone and iPad in creating and marketing the products. Samsung plans an appeal.

The products Apple wants banished from the United States are all smartphones: Galaxy S 4G, Galaxy S2 AT&T, Galaxy S2, Galaxy S2 T-Mobile, Galaxy S2 Epic 4G, Galaxy S Showcase, Droid Charge and Galaxy Prevail.

Koh on June 26 banned the Galaxy Tab 10.1 from the U.S. market after finding it likely violated a "design patent." Samsung is now asking for that ban to be lifted after the jury found the computer tablet didn't infringe that particular patent, but it did find it infringed three Apple's software patents that cover the popular "bounce-back" and pinch-to-zoom features.

The judge has scheduled a Sept. 20 hearing to discuss Apple's demands for the sales bans. She asked Apple on Friday to submit the list of products its wants removed from U.S. stores after Samsung complained it doesn't have enough time to prepare for the scheduled hearing.

The judge is deciding whether to reschedule the hearing to give Samsung more time to prepare. The South Korean company plans to ask the judge to toss out the jury's verdict as unsupported by the evidence. Failing that, the company says it will appeal the verdict to higher courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court.

In addition to the sales bans, Apple also plans to ask the judge to triple the damages to $3.15 billion because of the jury's finding that Samsung "willfully" copied Apple.

Apple filed its lawsuit in April of last year alleging that 28 Samsung smartphones and computer tablets had "slavishly copied" the iPhones and iPads. Samsung countered with its own claims that Apple used its wireless technology without proper compensation.

A nine-person jury in its verdict Friday unanimously agreed with Apple. Most of the damages were tied to Samsung's smartphones. It rejected Samsung's counterclaims.

Most of the Samsung products found to have "infringed' Apple's patent were older devices no longer being sold. The list Apple presented to the court on Monday represent devices it believes are still being sold in U.S. stores, including several versions of the company's popular S2 phones introduced last year. Samsung's newest and hottest selling smartphone, the Galaxy S3, was not part of the lawsuit and is unaffected by the jury's verdict.

The award represents about 1.5 percent of Samsung's annual revenue. Analysts said the embarrassment of the verdict is a bigger blow for Samsung than the financial setback.

Still, the question remains whether Samsung and other Apple competitors will have to redesign their smartphones to avoid infringing Apple's patents. Most analysts agree the verdict sends a threatening message to device makers like Samsung who use Google's Android operating system.

Debate rages on over ECB bond-buying plan

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) ? Debate raged on among Europe's top bankers on Monday over the merits of a proposed plan for the European Central Bank to buy government bonds to lower borrowing costs for financially troubled governments.

Germany's national central bank, the Bundesbank, is increasingly isolated in its opposition to the plan, saying it would expose taxpayers to potential risks and could leave countries dependent on the financial relief as though on a drug.

Bundesbank head Jens Weidmann says bond purchases would also be too close to an outright bailout of governments, which the ECB is forbidden from doing by treaty.

The European Union treaty's provisions are meant to prevent the ECB from printing money to cover government debts, a practice which can cause inflation and compromise the bank's political independence. It is also meant to keep it from bailing out one member country at the expense of the others without governments having a say.

But Joerg Asmussen, the top German at the ECB and a member of the six-strong executive board, which runs the bank daily, countered that any purchases of government bonds will be carefully designed to avoid violating the treaty.

Asmussen said details were still being worked out and will be discussed at the next meeting of the bank's governing council on Sept. 6. However, he said "any concerns about treaty-violating financing of governments will be removed."

"We will only act within our mandate," he said in the text of a speech to be given in Hamburg.

Both Weidmann and Asmussen are part of the ECB's broader 23-member governing council, which sets policies monthly. When they meet in that capacity, neither represents German interests but those of the 17-country eurozone as a whole.

The remarks by Asmussen suggest German elite opinion is not unanimously against the idea. Chancellor Angela Merkel sounds open to the ECB plan as well, and Weidmann was the only member of the governing council to oppose the idea.

Weidmann warned in an interview in der Spiegel magazine that bond purchases could "be as addictive as a drug" because they can lead to governments depending on such outside help rather than doing politically painful things such as cutting budget deficits.

He has only one seat on the ECB's 23-member government council, but has support from many economists, legislators and voters in Germany. Analysts say any measures to fight the eurozone debt crisis will have difficulty succeeding if Germans aren't broadly willing to support them. German opinion counts because it's the biggest eurozone country and ultimately the biggest financial backer of any bailout effort.

Asmussen conceded that the bank's emergency tactics meant that some might doubt the bank's commitment to its policy "pillars" ? fighting inflation, remaining independent of politicians, and not engaging in bailouts.

"I am aware, that many ask, to themselves or publicly, whether these pillars are still standing...We must take these concerns seriously," he said.

ECB president Mario Draghi said on Aug. 2 that the bank may buy government bonds to drive down excessively high borrowing rates for heavily indebted governments. The purchases would push bond prices up and lower interest yields, since yield and price move in opposite directions. Lower yields would then be reflected in government borrowing costs when they sell bonds.

Draghi said the purchases would be aimed at making sure the central bank's low interest rates are reflected in other short-term interest rates throughout the eurozone ? a purpose consistent with its legal mandate. Countries that want the help must apply first to the eurozone bailout fund and agree to conditions that would reduce their deficits and debts.

Spain and Italy are struggling to borrow money at affordable cost because bond investors fear they may default. Yet the governments must constantly sell new bonds to pay off old ones that are coming due.

The treaty explicitly forbids the ECB from opening a line of credit to governments or buying government bonds at primary auctions, where the bonds are issued to investors. However, the treaty does allow the ECB to purchase securities, including government bonds, from other investors in the secondary market to carry out its interest rate policy. The exact limits of its mandate have become a topic of intense debate.

Weidmann said in his interview that he was not just relying on legal arguments but on economic ones ? that such aid would lower governments' resolve to act to fix their finances. He also said that the risk of losses on any bonds that are bought would be ultimately shared by eurozone taxpayers ? meaning such decisions should be made by elected parliaments who can legitimately commit taxpayer money.

Can Romney Woo Latinos in Nevada?

LAS VEGAS? President Obama has no business asking Oscar Cuevas for his vote.

Since Obama assumed office, Cuevas, 23, lost his job as a cell-phone store manager when the shop went out of business. He spent the next two years unemployed. His parents lost their home and moved in with him. So did four of his siblings, one with a newborn child. Cuevas hasn?t paid his own mortgage in months, and the bank has come knocking. He now has a job helping to register Latino voters, but he still can?t make his house payment. Too many other bills have piled up.

Cuevas voted for Barack Obama in 2008, but he is undecided this time. ?He?s not doing a bang-up job,? Cuevas said, flashing an infectious smile.

For 100 years,??has been the quintessential presidential bellwether, siding with the victor in 24 of the past 25 campaigns (it missed only Jimmy Carter), more than any other state. And this year, both sides are pouring millions of dollars into ground operations and television advertising to frame the debate.

If the 2012 election is about the economy, then Cuevas?and?Nevada?should be a lost cause for Obama. The state has topped the charts in unemployment (at 12 percent), foreclosures, and faded dreams. In some Las Vegas neighborhoods, more than eight in 10 homes are underwater, worth less than they were bought for. In the ?best-off? ZIP code in the Las Vegas region, 42 percent of homes are underwater, according to Zillow, the real-estate tracking firm. The only construction work here these days seems to be boarding up abandoned houses.

And yet the president is not just competitive in?Nevada, he is leading Republican Mitt Romney, according to most polls. It is not the 12-point margin he won by in 2008, but a slim lead is still a lead.

Vice President Joe Biden?s July speech here to the National Council of La Raza crystallized the Obama campaign?s strategy aimed at Latinos. Speaking in the foreclosure capital of America, it was 10 minutes before Biden mentioned the economy. Instead, he warned the crowd of nearly 2,000 Latino activists of the dangers posed by a President Romney.

?Close your eyes,? said Biden, channeling his inner revivalist.

In the span of a minute, he asked them 10 times to ?imagine? the horrors of a Romney presidency. Biden spoke of ?self-deportation,???s immigration law, and a veto of the Dream Act. Civil rights, voting rights, college scholarships, health care coverage for Hispanics?all are on the line. ?Close your eyes and imagine,? he repeated.

The Obama campaign?s tactics here in economically ravaged?Nevada?were laid bare: Shoot the messenger (Romney) and change the subject (from the economy).

Just as Obama wants Latinos to close their eyes to picture a dark Romney future, Romney wants them to open their eyes to the hardships of their Obama economic present.

?Given the dynamics of what?s going on [in the economy], it?s tough to imagine the president could be as close in this thing as he is,? said Sig Rogich, a GOP operative in the state who designed television ads for President George H.W. Bush?s campaigns.

Latinos are a big reason why. Although?Nevada?voted for George W. Bush twice, the state?s Hispanic population surged 81 percent between 2000 and 2010. Hispanics are now a quarter of the population and a muscular share of the electorate. They will grow stronger: The 2010 census showed that 39 percent of?Nevadaresidents under 18 are Hispanic.

A FAILURE TO CONNECT

?You just don?t make old white voters like you used to here,? said David Damore, an associate professor of political science at the University of?Nevada?(Las Vegas). Despite a depressed economy that has disproportionately hurt Latinos, particularly those in the construction trades, they haven?t fled Obama?s coalition. Yet.

They are voters like Adriana Reyes, a 24-year-old who has a janitorial job at a mall and is still living with her parents. ?Can?t move out because the family is struggling,? she said, as she walked through a shopping center where two discount markets compete with empty storefronts. ?It?s bad.? She doesn?t blame the president entirely, but she says, ?He doesn?t seem like he?s done a lot.?

A registered independent, Reyes voted for Obama four years ago. Now she?s not sure. ?I go for where it?s going to help out the economy,? she said. She still isn?t sold on the idea that Romney is that candidate, though.

Reyes is not alone. In interviews with?Nevada?voters, political strategists, and politicians, it?s clear that the state?s financial collapse has moved many voters out of the president?s camp and into the undecided column. But many have yet to migrate all the way to embracing Romney. The polls agree.

A major reason is Romney?s image problem with Latinos. In a July NBC News/Telemundo/Wall Street Journal?poll, only 22 percent of Latinos nationally viewed Romney positively; 44 percent held a negative view. (In contrast, 64 percent of Hispanics viewed Obama favorably.)

The Latino vote is critical well beyond?Nevada. The Hispanic population tops 20 percent in the key swing states of??and?, and is a burgeoning force in some Southern states such as??and. Even?, long the subject of complaints about its lack of diversity and its central role in the presidential nominating gantlet, saw its Latino population boom 84 percent in the past decade (still only 5 percent of the population).

Romney?s personal unpopularity among Latinos is partly attributable to the hard-line immigration stance he took during the GOP primary season. It was one of the few issues on which Romney could lap the field from the right, and he seized the opportunity, especially during the fleeting moments that??Gov.?appeared to be a formidable foe; that?s when Romney memorably embraced a doctrine of ?self-deportation.?

The issue has had a spillover effect. In the NBC poll, Latinos said that Obama would handle every major policy area better than Romney, including the economy, by at least a 2-1 advantage.

Romney is working to close the gap in the state. His campaign has hired a?Nevada?Hispanic outreach director, which it says is a GOP first. Romney?s son Craig has cut Spanish-language ads that feature a fact that the candidate himself rarely mentions on the trail: Mitt Romney?s father was born in Mexico. The campaign has dispatched its highest profile Latino surrogates to the state, including Sen.??of?Florida?and former Bush Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez.

HIDG THE BALL

Given Romney?s stance on the Dream Act and his tough rhetoric on immigration, his campaign has focused its communications to Latinos (and almost every other demographic) on a one-size-fits-all message on the economy.

?Jobs and the economy?it trumps everything,? said Ryan Erwin, a GOP strategist and top Romney adviser in the state. ?You can?t walk through a grocery store or a??without hearing people talking about the economy. It is a pretty narrow focus if anyone thinks Hispanic voters aren?t caring about the economy as much as anyone else.?

The Obama campaign is doing everything it can to undercut Romney?s credibility as the potential fiscal fixer-in-chief. A barrage of TV ads, in English and Spanish, has questioned Romney?s character, portraying him as an out-of-touch millionaire with offshore bank accounts who can?t relate to their financial woes. Romney?s plans for a car elevator at his La Jolla, Calif., beach house, his wife?s ?couple of Cadillacs,? and his friendship with NASCAR team owners have helped the Obama cause. ?That has a real resonance in a state that?s been hit as hard as we have,? said Zac Petkanas, a senior strategist for the?Nevada?state Democratic Party.

The party has recent practice in demonizing the opposition to distract from a tepid economy. In 2010, unpopular Senate Majority Leader??stood for reelection amid an even worse economic climate. The Democrat won by casting his GOP opponent, tea partier?, as an extremist who couldn?t be trusted. Romney, calm and cool in his second presidential bid, is a far more difficult mark. But the strategy is much the same.

In the La Raza speech, Biden skewered Romney for his Swiss bank accounts, Cayman Island cash stashes, and hidden tax returns. Then, in a single line, he linked?Arizona?s controversial immigration law and Romney?s shrouded personal finances.

?He wants you to show your papers, but he won?t show us his,? Biden said. The crowd thundered its approval.

Republicans say that Team Obama is simply trying to divert attention from the economy, especially among Latinos. ?They cannot run on their record,? said Hector Barreto, a former Bush administration official and now the cochairman of?Juntos con Romney,?the campaign?s Hispanic-outreach effort. ?They know it, and we know it.?

(The Romney operation had hoped that Carlos Gutierrez, the former Bush Commerce secretary, could make a rebuttal speech at the four-day conference, but La Raza turned him down, saying that the request came too late. Instead of a spot at the podium, Gutierrez and Barreto were relegated to the hallways.)

Republicans complain that the president?s June policy decree, which could allow hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants who came to the United States as children to stay and work? without fear of deportation, is crass political pandering.

?Pigeonholing Latino voters into focusing entirely on immigration is an insult,? said Pete Ernaut, an influential GOP strategist in the state.

But it appears to be working. The July NBC poll gave Obama a 44-point lead among Latino registered voters nationally, 67 percent to 23 percent.

STUMBLIN??IN

With less than three months until the election, neither Romney nor Obama has skated a flawless performance in?Nevada.

Since he has been president, Obama has made offhand remarks that disparage spending in Las Vegas. ?You don?t blow a bunch of cash in Vegas when you?re trying to save for college,? he said in 2010. It was a cutting remark for a city and state that relies so heavily on tourism, and at a time when the industry had cratered. Locals took offense, elected officials howled, and business visibly declined.

?Did it hurt us? It did,? said Jan Jones, a former two-term Las Vegas mayor in an interview in her office at Caesar?s Palace casino, where she?s now an executive. Jones is a Democrat and supports Obama.

Romney?s misstep came last fall. ?Don?t try to stop the foreclosure process,? he said during a Las Vegas swing. ?Let it run its course and hit the bottom.?

In a state where the housing bust could take more than a decade to recover, that remark ?went over like a lead balloon,? said Eric Herzik, professor of political science at the University of?Nevada?(Reno).

But more than a poor turn of phrase, Herzik said, Romney?s comment raised questions about what he would do as president to help?Nevada. The GOP free-market philosophy of lower taxes and fewer regulations is largely a reality in this Western outpost. ?We?re a state built on gambling; the bars never close; we have legalized prostitution in 10 counties,? Herzik said.

That laissez-faire approach had fueled decades of spectacular growth. And, in recent years, a staggering collapse. ?If low taxes and regulations were the panacea, then?Nevada?should have led the nation out of recession,? Herzik said. Instead, it has been among the laggards.

Erwin, the Romney adviser, said that?Nevadans blame a growing federal bureaucracy under Obama for strangling the recovery. ?Governor Romney?s message of economic freedom is going to resonate well here,? he said.

Still, nagging questions remain, even among?Nevada?Republicans, about what exactly Romney is promising. His campaign ?is now, ?He did bad, and I can do better,? ? Ernaut said. ?At some point, voters are going to say, ?How?? ?

LIMITING THE DAMAGE

The extent to which the Latino electorate will be motivated to come out for Obama remains one of 2012?s great intangibles. To win here, Romney does not need to carry the Latino vote. But he must limit Obama?s margin of victory. The state?s GOP governor,?, who is Latino, won election in 2010 despite garnering only a third of the Hispanic vote, according to exit polling.

The president faces some headwinds among Latinos nationally. Despite the June decree, Obama?s overall deportation record has been a sore subject. His administration has set records, ejecting nearly 400,000 illegal immigrants in the last full fiscal year.

Obama also promised in his 2008 campaign to tackle a comprehensive immigration overhaul but then did little to advance such a plan, even as Democrats controlled all the levers of government in 2009 and 2010. Romney?s campaign regularly reminds Hispanics of this. ?Now you?re getting around to it,? Barreto said of the deportation freeze. ?Why? Because you?re running for reelection. Why? Because the enthusiasm is down in the Hispanic community.?

Another wrinkle in November?s Hispanic turnout is a local labor fight that could have national implications. The most potent union in the state, Culinary Workers Union Local 226, nearly half of whose 55,000 members are Latino, is threatening to sit out the election if contract and organizing disputes remain unresolved. If this key cog in the Democrats? Latino-turnout machine stays on the sidelines, it could cost the Democrats dearly. Still, most analysts expect the union to ultimately mobilize.

If Latinos are Obama?s great demographic trump card in this desert state, Romney has a smaller one of his own: the Mormon vote. The community accounts for an estimated 7 percent of the population but votes at a far higher clip. Church members are expected to turn out in droves for Romney, the first presidential nominee from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and for the state?s GOP senator,?, who is also Mormon and is locked in a tough race.

Of course, the biggest wild card remains how the?Nevada?economy fares between now and November. Las Vegas, more than anywhere, depends on a confidence economy?visitors feeling flush and spending like it?and confidence has been on the decline.

The economy is a constant worry for Cuevas, whose family is living in his house that?s on the brink of foreclosure. Sure, he said, he?s still ?looking? at both Obama and Romney, but that?s not really the right word. He can only afford to glance at politics these days. He thinks about the election a lot, though, as he helps register voters. Election Day is when Cuevas becomes unemployed again.

?This job,? he said, ?ends Nov. 6.??
