And yet because of partisan politics we haven?t been able to figure out a way to accommodate them within the confines of our heritage as a nation of laws, but also our legacy as a nation of immigrants.?

Rubio has announced that he is working on an alternative version of the DREAM Act, which would provide young illegal aliens with a special visa allowing them to stay in the United States legally and get in line to become citizens.

The Florida senator claims that his plan does not prevent young illegals from becoming citizens, but falls short of providing them with a direct pathway to such status. He has not published a specific proposal yet.

As currently crafted, the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act, introduced more than a decade ago, would provide conditional, permanent resident status for a period of six years to those who came into the United States illegally before the age of 16. After the six-year period, those eligible would be able to attain legal permanent status, if they obtain an associate-level academic degree or serve in the U.S. military for two years. Legal permanent residents can become citizens.

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) told reporters on April 26? that he finds Rubio?s plan interesting, but that it would be difficult to pass in the current political environment.

Rubio is a potential vice presidential running mate for Mitt Romney, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee who also spoke to the Latino Coalition.

Alex Burgos, a spokesman for Rubio, told CNSNews.com that Romney has shown ?openness? to the modified proposal dubbed the GOP DREAM Act.

The spokesman?s comments came after the Massachusetts governor on April 23 said that he was ?studying? Rubio?s proposal, but did not specifically endorse the plan.

There were people protesting outside the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, possibly illegal immigrant students, demanding that those speaking at the Latino Coalition event acknowledge and support the DREAM Act as currently proposed.

?Malls have great land, so their intrinsic value as real estate is high,? said Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust President Ed Glickman. ?The question with that bottom 10 percent is whether we need those properties as traditional malls.?

Lawyers indicated to the judge that the government might wrap up its case this week. Clemens lawyer Rusty Hardin then said he would need seven or eight working days to present the defense's case. Both sides are working to finish before June 8, when conflicts with U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton's schedule could cause the trial to go on recess for a month.

Before Monday, McNamee had not been allowed to say that he provided former Clemens teammates Pettitte and Knoblauch with human growth hormone, or that he helped ex-Clemens teammate Mike Stanton obtain HGH from drug dealer Kirk Radomski. The judge had ruled that such information could prejudice the jury against Clemens.

But Hardin's grueling cross-examination tipped the balance in the other direction, prosecutors argued. Hardin suggested before the jury last week that McNamee had solely or primarily targeted Clemens, and that no one had been charged in connection with McNamee's accusations, raising the issue of McNamee's credibility.

Walton therefore ruled that McNamee could name Knoblauch and Stanton as receiving HGH in 2001 when they were with the New York Yankees, and Pettitte in 2002 when he was with the Yankees. The judge instructed the jury that the names could only be used to help establish McNamee's "credibility as a witness" and cannot be used to "infer Mr. Clemens' guilt."

The government took full advantage, with prosecutor Daniel Butler using all three names repeatedly. McNamee said he was present when all three players used their HGH. Pettitte already has testified that he used HGH in 2002, so now the jury knows that McNamee was the source.

Butler also worked in quick time to build all the sympathy he could for McNamee. The jury had heard last week that McNamee has a medical condition that he wanted to keep secret, but now he revealed what it is: He is a Type 1 diabetic who uses an insulin pump, particularly when under stress. He then looked at the jury and apologized for the extra breaks.

McNamee also said "I lost my job, lost my clients" after he and Clemens were cited in the 2007 Mitchell Report on drugs in baseball. McNamee said he was led to believe that the report would not contain names when he began cooperating with its investigators. He cited his lack of work, saying the only athletes he trains now are two college students who don't pay him.

McNamee also said his marriage is over, in part due to the fallout from the Clemens case. He is going through a contentious divorce, and he said he sees his children only twice a week and that it will be "rocky road" to rebuild his relationship with them.

While the defense got McNamee to acknowledge that parts of his story have changed over time, he has not deviated from the core of his testimony - that he injected Clemens with performance-enhancing substances in 1998, 2000 and 2001.

With McNamee finished after five-plus days on the stand, prosecutors called a Miller-Coors manager to testify about the beer can McNamee says he used to store waste after an alleged steroids injection of Clemens in August 2001. The witness, Anthony Manuele, looking at markings on the bottom of the can, was able to confirm that it would have been on shelves between August 2001 and Nov. 15, 2001 - coinciding with McNamee's timeframe.

Hardin, on cross-examination, jabbed prosecutors by asking Manuele: "You don't sell these beer cans to keep needles, do you?"

The judge sustained a government objection, but not before Manuele could answer: "No, sir."

One of the charges against Clemens is that he obstructed Congress when he stated in a deposition that he "was not at Jose Canseco's house on or about June 9, 1998." That's the date McNamee says he saw Clemens and Toronto Blue Jays teammate Canseco talking to a mysterious third person at a pool party at Canseco's Florida home, a person McNamee said he felt had a connection to steroids. McNamee said he first injected Clemens with steroids a few days later.

So the government called Alexander Lowrey, who said he was at the party as a starry-eyed 11-year-old boy and posed for photos with both Clemens and Canseco. Prosecutors showed jurors the photos: One shows the boy on the deck of the pool, next to a smiling Clemens standing in the shallow end of the water. The former pitcher's hair is bleach-blonde, which is how Lowrey, now 25, said he recalled it.

Clemens' lawyer tried to play with the potentially faulty memory Lowrey might have of a party that happened 14 years ago. Lowrey couldn't remember some details and said he had to estimate the times he arrived and left, but he said he had a clear memory of meeting the two major leaguers.

Clemens, in his congressional deposition in February 2008, said: "I never was at the party." Later in the deposition, he said: "I wasn't here at this - at a party that he had. I could have gone by there after a golf outing. So - but I was not at this party."

Tributes pour in for late Bee Gees star Robin Gibb

Bee Gees star Robin Gibb, singer with one of the biggest-selling groups of all time and a key figure in the breakthrough of disco, has died aged 62, having lost his battle against cancer.

Gibb had been in remission earlier this year but was hospitalised in April and then fell into a coma after contracting pneumonia.

Though he woke up again on April 20, he had advanced colorectal cancer and finally succumbed to his illness late on Sunday night.

"The family of Robin Gibb, of the Bee Gees, announce with great sadness that Robin passed away on Sunday 20 May, 2012 at 10:46pm (2146 GMT) following his long battle with cancer and intestinal surgery," a statement on his website read.

The Bee Gees -- brothers Barry, Maurice and Robin Gibb -- helped turn disco into a global phenomenon in the 1970s with hits such as "How Deep Is Your Love", "Stayin' Alive", and "Night Fever".

Hailing from the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea, they grew up in Manchester and Australia and were singing publicly from childhood.

Born on December 22, 1949, Robin was 17 when he sang lead vocals on the Bee Gees' first British number one, "Massachusetts", in 1967, before they switched styles to disco in the 1970s.

The trio's sharp songwriting and immaculate harmonies helped them notch up record sales of more than 200 million.

"We used to say that we were one soul in three bodies. We worked with such spirit between us, able to read each other's thoughts when we wrote together," Robin once said.

"How Can You Mend a Broken Heart", the group's first US number one, along with "Jive Talkin'", "Nights on Broadway" and "You Should be Dancing" established them as big stars.

But the disco soundtrack "Saturday Night Fever" (1977), which sold more than 40 million copies, was their biggest success, becoming one of the best-selling albums of all time.

The brothers also also wrote hit songs for others including Diana Ross, ("Chain Reaction"), Barbra Streisand ("Woman In Love"), Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton ("Islands In The Stream") Dione Warwick ("Heartbreaker") and Frankie Valli ("Grease").

Their last studio album was 2001's "This Is Where I Came In".

The Bee Gees were made Commanders in the Order of the British Empire -- one step below a knighthood -- in 2004.

Former British prime minister Tony Blair was a close friend and stayed at Gibb's Miami mansion in 2006.

"Robin was not only an exceptional and extraordinary musician and songwriter, he was a highly intelligent, interested and committed human being," Blair said.

"He was a great friend with a wonderful open and fertile mind and a student of history and politics. I will miss him very much."

Broadcaster Paul Gambaccini, a pop history expert, called Gibb "one of the important figures in the history of British music" and "talented beyond even his own understanding".

"Robin had one of the best white soul voices ever," he said, citing "Massachusetts".

"The Bee Gees are second only to Lennon and McCartney as the most successful songwriting unit in British popular music," he added.

"Their accomplishments have been monumental," he said, citing not only their own number one hits, but those written for others, such as Diana Ross.

Fellow music stars voiced their sadness at the singer's passing.

"They were on a par with The Beatles and I think sometimes people forget that," Cliff Richard told BBC radio.

Queen guitarist Brian May said on his website: "An amazing voice, so distinctive and expressive. Real magic, and will remain immortal."

Gibb's death comes three days after Grammy winner Donna Summer, nicknamed the queen of disco, who died aged 63 from lung cancer.

Canadian rocker Bryan Adams wrote on Twitter: "Robin Gibb RIP. Very sad to hear about yet another great singer dying too young."

Simply Red frontman Mick Hucknall called Gibb a "musical giant".

Boyzone singer Ronan Keating and Take That songwriter Gary Barlow -- whose bands both topped the British charts with Bee Gees covers, also paid tribute.

"I am devastated. Can't believe it," said Keating, while Barlow added: "His music will outlive us all."

Gibb's latest composition, "The Titanic Requiem", a classical work written with his son Robin-John, was given its world premiere in London in April, but he was too ill to attend.

He spearheaded the campaign to create a memorial to the Royal Air Force's Bomber Command, which carried out controversial, devastating World War II air attacks on German cities. It is due to be unveiled in London next month.

"It is a tragedy that Robin will not see the finished article," the Bomber Command Association said.

"But Robin did his bit for all who served in Bomber Command and on the behalf of the veterans and the relatives of those who died in WWII, we would simply like to say: thank you."

He is survived by three children: Spencer and Melissa, born to his first wife Molly, and Robin-John, born to his second wife Dwina

Seaway pipeline sends oil to Texas in historic reversal

HOUSTON (Reuters) - The Seaway pipeline began pumping crude from Cushing, Oklahoma, oil tanks to the heart of the U.S. refining industry in Houston on Saturday, marking a historic shift in the way oil flows across the United States.

The first barrels went into the line about noon CDT (1700 GMT) Saturday and volumes were expected to increase within days to 150,000 barrels per day (bpd), spokesman Rick Rainey of operating partner Enterprise Products said by email. Enbridge Inc is a 50 percent partner in the project.

The startup is the first direct link from Cushing to the Gulf Coast, the biggest U.S. refining center. Cushing is the delivery and storage point for the U.S. benchmark oil futures contract, which represents a blend of crudes from the Midwestern states. It has been landlocked in Cushing and steeply discounted to world prices as a result.

The average motorist will not see much, if any, difference in gasoline pump price but oil producers and Gulf Coast refiners expect profits to improve. Many argue the reversal is the start of a trend toward reduced U.S. dependence on crude from the Middle East and elsewhere overseas.

Historically, the 669-mile (1,077-km) Seaway system had flowed from the Gulf Coast to Cushing, carrying crude oil from South Texas, but had been underutilized recently.

The first oil will take 12 days to reach Houston, 550 miles south of Cushing, but market anticipation of the event already has lifted inland crude prices in North America, although analysts disagree how much and how fast prices will change with the reversal of Seaway.

The spread between U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate and global benchmark Brent, similar crudes historically priced at near parity, narrowed to $15 from almost $19 Wednesday. It was as much as $28 late last year, costing U.S. and Canadian oil producers billions but boosting profits for Midwestern U.S. refiners.

EVENTUAL FLOW OF 850,000 BPD

The Seaway pipeline, which goes to Freeport and Houston, opened in 1995 with a south-to-north flow. A surge in Canadian oil sands output and U.S. shale oil production, however, has rendered the south-to-north flow unnecessary.

Interest in reversing Seaway to flow north-to-south intensified in the past 18 months as Cushing inventories surged and NYMEX WTI fell to unprecedented discounts. Cushing stocks hit a record 45 million barrels last week.

Last fall, ConocoPhillips sold its 50 percent interest in the line to Enbridge, which then agreed with co-owner Enterprise to reverse Seaway. It has taken several months of work on pump stations to bring the plan to reality.

A new pump station is under construction at the Cushing end to allow flows to reach 400,000 bpd in early 2013. Ultimately, Enbridge and Enterprise plan to more than double the line's capacity to 850,000 bpd.

That and other planned pipeline projects, along with rail and barge transportation of crude, will be required to ease the Midwestern oil oversupply more fully and permanently, most analysts have said.

"One theory is that once barrels start moving out of Cushing and the pipeline expands to 300,000 or 400,000 bpd by early 2013 the spread will narrow. We're seeing some of that," said Tom Bentz, director of BNP Paribas Commodity Futures in New York.

"The other theory is that even though crude is moving out, there is still more coming into Cushing due to increased Canadian and U.S. production. Also North Sea (Brent) production problems will keep the spread very wide," Bentz said.

Analysts had mixed opinions whether the first crude down Seaway would be light sweet or heavy sour or a mix. The type of oil makes a difference to refiners as well as pipeliners. Much of the stored oil at Cushing is now Canadian heavy sour.

Enterprise did not disclose the initial mix of oil grades.

Light oil is easier to handle at pipeline startup than heavy, making light the likely choice, said Abudi Zein of Genscape, an industry data monitor.

"The biggest bang for the buck would be to displace foreign light sweet with much cheaper domestic light sweet," said Rusty Braziel of RB Energy consultants in Houston.

Mark Routt of KBC Advanced Technologies in Houston had a different opinion. Heavy crude costs more to pipeline than light crude but Gulf Coast refiners are geared for cheaper heavy, he said.

"My guess is that slightly more heavy than light will be flowing," Routt said.

Ryan discusses Hamilton's future

HOUSTON (AP) - Texas Rangers star slugger Josh Hamilton insists he isn't worried about his impending free agency.

Team president Nolan Ryan certainly is.

Hamilton, who is eligible for free agency after this season, said before the start of Friday's series with the Houston Astros that he's not worrying about it "at all."

"I'm praying a lot about it," the deeply religious player said. "God will show up and I'll be here or somewhere else. It's not about where I want to be, it's about where he wants me to be."

Ryan said they'll put their "best foot forward" to keep the MLB home run leader. But that "you don't know what somebody else might do."

He laughed and shook his head when asked how important Hamilton was to his team.

"Those kinds of players don't come along very often. You can count them on one hand - those kinds of impact players like that," Ryan said. "So he's definitely a very special player that means an awful lot to any organization and very much to our organization. We're going to make every effort to do what we can do, whether that works out or not, we'll just have to wait and see."

Ryan said general manager Jon Daniels was in contact with Hamilton's people in the offseason and in spring training. They're not currently discussing his future because they don't want it to be a distraction to Hamilton.

Ryan expects that something will be decided in late November or early December. He said he couldn't predict what the Rangers' chances are of keeping Hamilton, who turns 31 on Monday.

Hamilton, who is making $13.75 million this season, said the process isn't difficult for him because of his faith. Ryan believes that Hamilton wants to remain with the Rangers, but the left fielder said the decision is out of his hands.

"I've got faith in God and I trust God and I want to do his will more than mine," Hamilton said. "I don't necessarily want to do what's comfortable for me or my family. If he asks us to leave and go somewhere else, it might not be comfortable. But you know what? That's going to bring me closer to him and make me have a better relationship with him."

Hamilton entered Friday's game with 18 homers and 45 RBIs.

I was reminded of this story by Joan Acocella?s New Yorker review of Henry Hitching?s new book, The Language Wars: A History of Proper English. There are other problems with the review, too, including the way it tends to overlook the profound differences between speaking and writing, and the way it keeps dragging in texts and concepts (Eric Partridge on slang? Alan Ross on U and non-U? Political correctness? Postmodernism?) that don?t have very much to do with each other. But my main complaint is that the whole subject is boring.

That?s right, I?m talking prescriptivism versus descriptivism. Basically the issue boils down to the following axioms:

• English transpires in various (not mutually exclusive) registers, sub-registers, sub-sub-registers, and so on. Defense rests without testimony from Edwards or mistress

The defense in the John Edwards corruption trial rested on Wednesday morning in Greensboro, N.C., without calling the former presidential candidate, his daughter Cate or Rielle Hunter, his former mistress, mother of his 4-year-old love child and the woman at the center of the scandal that spawned the federal case against him.

According to MSNBC, "crowds had lined up two hours before court opened ... anticipating they might get an opportunity to hear from the principal players."

But Judge Catherine Eagles told jurors that no more witnesses would be called to testify at the trial, now in its 18th day. Closing arguments are expected to begin Thursday. Jury deliberations will follow, likely on Friday.

Edwards faces six criminal counts?including conspiracy, four counts of receiving illegal campaign contributions and one count of making false statements?for allegedly soliciting and secretly spending over $925,000 to cover up his affair with Hunter during the 2008 presidential election. If convicted on all six counts, Edwards faces up to 30 years in prison and $1.5 million in fines.

Prosecutors spent nearly three weeks delving into the salacious details of Edwards' affair. Lawyers for Edwards began presenting their case on Monday by shifting attention to something entirely less sexy: campaign finance law.

On Tuesday, records introduced at trial showed that Hunter was given $9,000 a month in cash for living expenses by Edwards' campaign finance chairman, Fred Baron, in 2008.

Baron began making regular deposits into Hunter's checking account in June 2008. Edwards, who by then had already ended his presidential bid but still had hopes of running for vice president, was trying to hide Hunter from public view. Lawyers for Edwards say the money was a personal donation unrelated to the campaign. Baron died in December 2008.

Cate Edwards Upton, a 30-year-old lawyer, had been expected to testify on her father's behalf. It was unclear whether Hunter, who was on the witness lists for the prosecution and defense, would be called.

In the end, it seems lawyers for Edwards concluded that putting Hunter or the candidate himself on the witness stand was just too risky.
