Projection: Romney wins Oregon GOP primary

CNN has projected Tuesday night that presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney will win the Nebraska and Oregon primaries.

Romney's wins came just one day after Rep. Ron Paul said he would end active campaigning in the race.

In Oregon, Romney had 73 percent of the vote with 51 percent of the state's precincts reporting. Paul had 12 percent, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum had 9 percent and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich had 6 percent.

With 69 percent of Nebraska's precincts reporting, Romney had 71 percent of the vote, Santorum had 14 percent, Paul had 10 percent and Gingrich had 5 percent.

Former Sen. Bob Kerrey will win the Democratic nomination for a U.S. Senate seat in Nebraska, CNN also projected. Sen. Ben Nelson, a Democrat, is retiring, leaving an open race.

A USA Today/Gallup poll released Tuesday indicated that a majority of Americans believe President Barack Obama will beat Romney in November's general election.

According to the poll, regardless of which candidate they support, 56 percent said that Obama will win re-election, with 36 percent saying that Romney will come out on top in November.

The survey indicated that Romney's favorable rating has jumped to 50 percent, with his unfavorable rating down to 41 percent. By a 52 percent to 46 percent margin, the president has a favorable rating.

Fifty-five percent said the economy would get better over the next four years if Romney were elected president, with 46 percent saying the economy would improve if Obama was re-elected.

The USA Today/Gallup poll was conducted Thursday through Sunday with 1,012 adults nationwide questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus 4 percentage points.
